Synopsis:
1953. Women's roles were defined and reinforced: Stay at home,
raise the family, and stand by your man. So it followed for a
group of seniors at Wellesley College, where success was not measured
by degree but rather by how well they married, and the ultimate
grade would be the one their future husbands would give them.
Their lives were unfolding by design until young art history professor
Katherine Watson (Roberts), a boheme from the West, questioned
not only that design but also the architects behind it. "Mona
Lisa Smile" is the story of a teacher who challenges her
students to look beyond the image of what is, and consider the
possibilities of what could be.
