Say
hello to the new box office action movie king! Well there aren't
that many others out, but still. From the very beginning to the
very end, it is all pure, grade "A", choice meat, classic
James Bond action. It seems the original formula wasn't touched
in the slightest for the latest secret agent 007 blockbuster.
All the sexual innuendos are there by the bucketful to make sure
you're soaking wet (uhh ). All the gadgets you come to expect.
All the chases, gun fights and occasional corny one liners. Basically,
if you're a Bond aficionado you'll be in euphoric nirvana.
Pierce Brosnan reprises his role
as the famous secret agent (kind of an oxymoron, no?) James Bond:
MI6 agent 007. Impossible stunts and fast intense action are the
soup du jour in this latest iteration of the long running series.
Right off the bat they plunge you head first into a great and
furious chase scene with hovercrafts decked out in bulletproof
armor (naturally) with gattling guns mounted for your demise.
As all Bond chases, this one was great. Reminded me of the boat
chase in the last film (actually of ALL chases in the 007 series).
Hey if it's not broken right? We then switch to the opening title
sequence that doesn't disappoint. With Madonna doing the honors
of her theme song- "Die Another Day" (which by the way
was very true to the Bond feel and was one of the best theme songs
for the series I've heard in some time) and many beautiful naked
women dancing to the music, it's the quintessential Bond opener.
YAY! I thought the sequence was very cool. They use digital effects
to make the dancers look like living fire and ice.
Further
in we find the never-ending beauty of Halle Berry. As Jinx, she's
basically the female Bond as she does her own undercover dirty
work. She plays her usual intelligent, beauty with attitude role
that suits her so well. I liked her character and from what I
hear there are talks of spinning her off into her own feature.
This rumor isn't confirmed but I can definitely see the potential.
I mean, hell, if XXX can do it, imagine Ms. Berry? Another thing
of beauty in the film is the new Bond mobile. (Can you say GORGEOUS?
I think you can.) The Aston Martin is back with a vengeance! It's
sleek, shiny, curvy and full of guns! (Reminds me of a date I
once had) Just like BMW enjoyed the reflected glory of the last
Ian Flemming based creation so will AM as this car is sure to
wipe the floor with all competing luxury sports cars. And by the
way, were those 30" rims he was rockin?
But
is this a perfect movie? Well I do have a gripe or two that don't
necessarily take away from the film. It depends on what you're
looking for. As far as an all out Action movie is concerned, 007-
DIE ANOTHER DAY is far and away one of the best ones that's come
out in a good time. It's non-stop and intense. Chases everywhere,
narrow escapes are the only kind and the good guy always wins.
While I was watching though I began to ask myself whether some
of the scenes were cliched or was that merely part of the Bond
universe. For instance- the women. I'm not one to complain about
any love scene in any movie and when you watch a 007 flick you
come to expect it, but where was the challenge? He basically said
his name and was in the sack the next second. It left a little
to be desired. Isn't the chase half the fun? But maybe that's
just me. Also, don't look for a deep and intricate Tom Clancy
plot here. The overall story is your basic evil guy who's out
for world domination (in this case control over a unified Korea).
Again, this is probably what Bond fans want and expect. They even
used the old kill-em-with-a-laser routine. And the name of the
head henchman? Mr. Kil! Oh geez. Only the 007 series can get away
with that. The special effects were great though. Very cool how
they showed the latest all-powerful weapons at the bad guys disposal.
Naturally Bond's gizmos are cooler. One of my favorites was the
dive off a transport plane. Both he and Jinx use some sort of
personal mini plane/glider to sneak in past radar and get to their
destination. SO cool! I want one!!
All
in all it was a fun ride. As I said earlier, the Bond fans will
be in heaven. DIE ANOTHER DAY is a perfect poster boy representation
of what all Bond movies are about. All the cliches, one-liners,
one night stands, guns and melodrama are there; perfectly biogenetically
preserved (a-la Austin Powers) from the 70's and reanimated in
the warm liquid goo phase for our viewing pleasure. Go see it
if you're in the mood to hear sexual innuendo from beginning to
end. Go see it if you're a sucker for all the cliched and trademarked
James Bond villainy. And especially go see it if you're looking
for a fun way to spend 2 hours and forget your worries.
