It's because of Ang Lee that we think of Ed Norton, not Eric Bana as The Incredible Hulk. Lee and Bana brought a version of the character to the screen in a movie that is often maligned, sometimes needlessly and other times completely legitimately (Hulk dogs?). That lead to Louis Letterier's re-launch of the series that used the Hulk TV show as a jumping-off point for the film's narrative.
Also differentiating The Incredible Hulk from just The Hulk is the idea of a unified Marvel Universe on film. The Incredible Hulk is now the mark in the sand, with all other Marvel releases flowing towards the Avenger's, the Robert Downey Jr cameo at the end of Letterier's effort means Tony Stark has already become involved in S.H.I.E.L.D. and a team is already being assembled. That's why Iron Man and Iron Man 2 take place before The Incredible Hulk and its talk of super-serums. That's why The First Avenger: Captain America is before the Hulk and Thor is rumored to be AFTER the Hulk leading up to The Avengers movie.
Slam all this together with the news that Spider-Man is going the Ultimate route and it might be more pertinent to look at Marvel's The Ultimates instead of Marvel's Avengers. The Ultimates first volume starts with the team fighting a Hulk-gone-mad in New York City, which has lead to rumors that Norton and his green alter-ego will appear as a villain in The Avengers movie.
Add to that some off-screen drama when The Incredible Hulk was released. Star and co-writer Edward Norton was vocal about disagreeing with the film's final cut, wavering on promotion for the film even as it started to become a hit. Since then, Norton hasn't confirmed or denied that he's going to return to Marvel, that is, until Coming Soon got him to speak on it, confirming that he's had contact with Marvel through his agents:
"...There's always been an agenda I think to unspool a lot of the Marvel Universe and then come back... I think they've got a lot of new stuff that they're rolling out and then I think at some point they're going to figure out how they want to get around to 'Avengers.'"
"The main guy I had a beef with there left anyways, as always happens," he admitted. "As David Mamet said, 'Just wait 'em out cause they'll be gone, and you'll still be there.'"
Things are looking up for the Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johannson, Sam Jackson, [Captain America Actor] and Ed Norton Avengers.
Here's hopin'!
