Aaron Eckhart Talks TDK's Harvey Dent

By Ryan 'The Rican with the Irish name' McLelland on July 13, 2007

Batman has been on the silver screen for over sixty years starting with his first serial back in 1943.  Yet the appearance of one of his greatest enemies would not show his (Two) face until 1995's Batman Forever.  That rogue was Two-Face and the performance by Tommy Lee Jones in the film was underwhelming.  I'll chalk it up to the horrible direction that director Joel Schumacher took (and nearly killed) the franchise.

Why is the role of Harvey Dent important?

In the comic books Dent had some time to establish himself as the District Attorney of Gotham City.  Batman's alter-ego Bruce Wayne was friends with Dent and Batman, Dent, and Commissioner Gordon worked together to help rid Gotham of the criminal element.  Dent is disfigured in a courtroom and thusly goes insane from the action.  However he is not the crazy over-the-top idiot that Jones played him for in Batman Forever.  He is methodical yet always 50/50 on an issue because of him needing to flip his coin to make a decision.

Fast forward twelve years with Aaron Eckhart taking on the role of Harvey Dent/Two-Face.  Eckhart is coming off one of my favorite comedies of all time (Thank You For Smoking - if you haven't seen it...SEE IT!) and will have a chance to establish his character of Harvey Dent in next year's The Dark Knight.  As of this writing we aren't even sure if Dent becomes Two-Face in the film.  If he does it might even come near the end thus setting up another sequel baddie.

That means we get to see Dent 'fighting the good fight' and Eckhart will be able to show the drive of Dent before the evil in him takes over.  Or does it?  Who knows.

Kellvin was at the 'No Reservations' junket today and cornered Eckhart about The Dark Knight

What did he have to say?

"There are some people here with poison darts so I can't talk about Batman," Eckhart joked before adding.  "I love the script and I wanted to do the movie."

And what about the other incarnation of Harvey Dent?  How does Aaron feel about that?  "I feel one is completely different from the other," he answered.  "I don't have to do what Tommy Lee Jones did."

You mean...suck?  Well that's a load of relief.  More to come on the man who will be Two-Face...
