This is one pairing I could care less about. Will Smith I've never been a fan of, and Steven Spielberg hasn't made a good movie since...since...shoot...gimme some time on that one because Munich is kind of hard to call, depends on who you talk to...uh...Oh well. Moving on to the story of a remake that will no doubt require a scene with Will Smith taking his shirt off:
Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are in early discussions to collaborate on a remake of Chan Wook-park's "Oldboy." DreamWorks is in the process of securing the remake rights, and the new pic will be distributed by Universal.
In the 2003 Korean original, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he's released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge.
Spielberg had been looking for an opportunity to make a film with Smith, who would play the kidnapped man if all the pieces fall into place. Spielberg is looking for a writer to begin the development process.
The film was originally set at U and then found its way to Mandate. Yaaaaaaa...what they're kindly leaving out is that Oldboy is a totally fucked up revenge movie. I bet Spielberg doesn't touch the "relationship angle" with a ten foot Jewish pole.
You guys want to see an Oldboy remake with Will Smith? Because I know I don't.

I cant believe hollywood or even steven spielberg are trying to remake a film like OldBoy. First off, OldBoy is and always will be the greatest revenge story ever told not even clasic revenge flicks could top a film like this. Its just a masterpiece of modern cinema, what makes this film great is the fact that it is not a fucking hollywood produced summer film. Its art its not a fucking popcorn blockbuster, directed by steven spielberg and starring a fucking guy that cant act if his son is not around. The fucking NERV on Will Smith and Spielberg for trying to ruin a masterpiece of a film. The only capable guys who could pull this off are: Jack Nicholson 20 years ago and the greatest director ever: Stanley Kubrick. Yes ive said it Spielberg is outdated and Will Smith cant act. With all said you should check this film out even if its Korean and if its rated R.

I liked Munich; it was a very compelling film with a lot of deserved empathy toward the original tragedies and how they impacted people's lives.
As for Will Smith: he can perform onscreen with the right direction. I know it's suddenly "cool" to make fun of him on message boards, but he has some silver screen charisma. I would like to see him step outside of his shell and carry a role such as this.

Enough of the story will be changed so it misses the point of the actual story, like I Am Legend.
I bet the only thing they want to keep is the intial mystery of how and why he was held in that room for 15 years.
"15 years? Aw hell no."

This hurts me to think about

This was Chan-wook Park's second in a trilogy of revenge flicks and comparably much weaker than his first movie "Sympathy for Mr.Vengence." That film shocked me stupid, while "Oldboy" played out like your typical John Woo/Chow Fat shoot em up with an attempt to throw a twist in at the end ("The Sixth Sense" comes to mind). It's perfect fodder for Hollywood to scoop up and dump out on our side of the pond. To quote Bill The Cat "Pffft!"

Pointless.

This film shouldn't be re-made. Not with Smith, not with Spielberg, not with anyone. It's a middle finger to the Asian film industry when their films get re-made so quick and it's a testament to the ignorance of people who can't connect to a film because it has subtitles. Idiots. Hollywood has no ideas.

Don't do it!!

No way they get this right. They'll make something with good production value, and somewhat cool, and utterly forgettable. Just release the original with a "Steven Spielberg and Will Smith present" tag, and move on!!!!!!!!!!!

just let them, the ring, grudge, the eye, bangkock dangerous, shutter, etc. etc. etc. remakes of asian film's happen because they can make a quick buck easily. they'll release it on fourth of july, it will make a shit ton of money no one will care and will soon be forgotten. but wouldnt you like to see it made to open up more possibility for the original movie? some will see it and than go and watch the first one. im a huge fan of the movie and a huge fan of the anime comic series. but the'll do it anyway so shut up and take it like a man.

Why are all these korean/chinese/japanese films being RE-DONE?
Isn't there originality in hollywood anymore?(sorry stupid question)
Spielberg seems to be losing his magic the last few years starting from Minority Report(boring!)
A.I. (that was his right?)The last Indy left much to be desired .. and War of the Worlds was unsatisfying so where does he go from here?
Munich was good..but I/m jonesing for some of that 80's magic to come back to him...
Will Smith I dont mind at all, Pursuit of happiness was a good movie. and you cant blame him for those payday movies cause he's an action star as well..and that stuff is just mindless action for the most part.... but yeah I thing he's got the skills better than most leading black dudes.but, Denzel Washington is still the benchmark for this crop of talent...
What was this subject about again?

Spielberg, RETIRE!! You haven't made a great film since Raiders of the Lost Ark!! THE MAGIC IS GONE MAN! THE MAGIC IS GONE!

No... this cannot happen. Oldboy was such a great piece of work, and should not be tampered with. I wouldn't mind if they wanted to do something like it involving Smith and Spielberg but don't call it Oldboy. It won't be nearly as good if they try, and half the shit we saw in the original... well there is no way they are gonna let that kind of stuff in a theater. This makes me upset.... why can't movie companies do anything original anymore?!
|
Um

Isn't Oldboy merely a variation on the Count of Monte Cristo anyway? O_o
|
I hope this doesn't happen
Commented By: Dj Render on 2008-11-07 23:28:11
Damn, Oldboy is a great flick that deserves to be left alone. The subject matter is too dark for spielberg and smith. And I'd say Darren Aronofsky's the perfect director for this material, just as Scorsese was for Infernal Affairs. If they remake it, they'll cut out the harsh and darkness that makes Oldboy interesting.
