Everyone at one time or another has that scenario that runs through their head about what they would do if stuck in a kill or be killed situation. How would handle yourself? What would you do to survive? When it comes down to it, even someone who plays a battered and broken housewife like Kim Basinger does in her new movie "While She was Out," you find the strength to somehow stay alive.
Even though the movie doesn't hit theaters until December, I got to check out a sneak peek at first time director Susan Montford's thriller. It was just me and another guy in the screening room. I was hoping Kim would be there so we could hold hands and make kissy faces but you can't have everything in this business.
Della (Kim Basinger) is a mother of two who lives in a large home and has to deal with her abusive and temperamental husband played by Craig Sheffer. It's Christmas Eve and Della needs to run to the shopping mall to pick up some wrapping paper. Judging from the condition of her house and her skittish nature, the apparent background story and one earlier scene lets the audience know that her husband is an enormous prick who beats his woman for no reason. Actually, the house was kind of a mess, so sometimes we men do have to lay down the law if we're trippin' over roller skates in the hallway.
Della gets pissed at someone taking up two parking spaces and has to park far from the mall. On her way in, she stops by the car and leaves a note telling him he's a jerk for taking up two parking spaces. I usually leave notes like this for the douchebags who take up two spots with their Hummers but my notes just consist of awesome cartoon drawings of middle fingers. This action by Della will eventually lead to a road she wasn't prepared to travel down.
After leaving the mall, Della is confronted by the owners of the car, four punk kids led by Lukas Haas who intimidate and threaten Della. When things go from bad to worse after a security guard steps in, Della finds herself on the run and chased into a wooded area where she finds herself hunted by these four kids. Armed with a toolbox she grabbed from her truck, she does her best to stay alive and rid herself of the unwanted attackers.

There is some blood and gore to the movie, but the main selling point is Kim's performance. She really plays the role of a broken and battered housewife well and you see that on screen. Only when she's finally confronted with the possibility of never seeing her children again does she step it up a notch and begin to take out her attackers. How does she do it? Let's just say she grabbed that toolbox for a reason.
The movie was shot entirely at night. To me, shooting in the woods must have been really difficult and a real challenge for a first time director. I've been in the woods at night, and unless there's a full moon, you can't see shit. So the lighting challenges must have been a real headache for Susan and her actors to overcome.
There were some areas I had issues with but this is a film that shows how easily things can go wrong when people are just crazy and pissed off. Think about it, how many times has someone flipped you off in traffic or you've said something in anger to a person you didn't know? You could find yourself in a situation you never thought you'd be in which is what happens to Della.
CHECK OUT YOUR FIRST LOOK AT THE IMAGES FROM THE FILM! For those of you who enjoy stories that have a person finding their inner strentgh and facing unimaginable odds, you'll enjoy While She Was Out. Susan Montford did a good job as a first time director, and I'm looking forward to her future projects.
