Brad Pitt Won't Be in Sherlock Holmes

Brad Pitt Won't Be in Sherlock Holmes As a fan of the BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who, I learned long ago not to trust U.K. papers when it comes to casting news. Unfortunately, it's hard not to get excited when names like Brad Pitt are mentioned explaining why some sites ran with the news that Brad Pitt was going to star in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes as the titular character's arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty.

The London Mirror appears to be the first to run the story, saying, "Desperate for help, Guy phoned his old mucker Brad, who had starred in his gangster flick Snatch. Fortunately, Brad, 45, had a couple of days free in his busy schedule to pop over to Blighty to play the evil criminal mastermind."

Warner Bros. was quick to set everyone straight when they heard the "news," releasing the following statement:

"The report in today’s London Mirror is completely inaccurate. Brad Pitt is not joining the cast of Sherlock Holmes and we're extremely pleased with the production of the film. As planned, it will be released on Christmas Day, 2009. In order to complete the movie, we've scheduled a few days on set to shoot a couple of additional scenes, obtain pick-up shots, and perfect some of the visual effects elements, all of which is standard filmmaking practice."

If you take a look at the original article, you can see there are few things that should have tipped someone off. For one, the idea that movie execs would throw a fit that the rough cut didn't include Moriarty is a little hard to believe. Though Moriarty proves to be the source of many of the crimes that Holmes solves in the book series, I doubt that execs would have been desperate enough to have him sandwiched into the story -- especially when they can always save him for the inevitable sequel.
