Comic-Con Report 2008: El Mayimbe checks out the Hasbro panel!

By El Mayimbe on July 24, 2008
El Mayimbe reporting from Comic Con and having a good ole time!

Being the huge GIJOE fan that I am, this is the one panel I most wanted to see.  I quickly scurried off from the super packed Masters of the Web panel (which was a rousing success!) and made it over to room 7ab to see what Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner had to show us die hard Joe fans.  By the way, the tanned Mr. Goldner has perfectly quoiffed hair and looked the part of hotshot Hollywood producer/CEO.  Just busting your chops Brian, really loved what you're doing with the brand!

Anyway, joining Goldner on the panel was Comic Book Legend Larry Hama along with producer Lorenzo DiBonaventura and screenwriter Stuart Beattie.

Unfortunately, no footage from the movie was shown.  Instead, we got the stills which everyone has already seen, but they did manage to show a couple of new stills like Storm Shadow topless, Heavy Duty blasting away, two new Snake Eyes in action shots, the Baroness leading her soldiers, and a new still with Duke and Baroness.  Lorenzo and Beattie fielded most of the questions from the audience about the movie.  Nothing really new was revealed that is not already known.  Fans seem to be stoked about how Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow are gonna blaze on the silver screen.

Although they didn't show movie footage which was a tad bit heartbreaking, Hasbro made up for it and managed to show about a minute or so of animation from the upcoming G.I.JOE: RESOLUTE.

What's the verdict?

IT KICKED ALL SORTS OF ASS!

If you're a Joe fan like me who grew up with it in the eighties, then this new cartoon coming in spring 2009 is for you.  It is pg-13, mature themed in nature and targeted for the old school Joe fans who are now grown up and in their mid to early 30s.  The clip was so good, they showed it again at the end to roaring applause.

Yes, it's the same footage that they showed earlier at Joecon, but I haven't seen it, only heard about it.  Wow! Snake Eyes does his thing in the clip and takes out a bunch of Cobra bad guys with his sword.  Definitely not for the kiddies.

Again, loved it!  It rocked!

The new animation is gonna come out on the web first, then on TV and DVD.  Can't wait.

If you've been following the column the last couple of years, you know how I have been personally tracking the development of the G.I.JOE movie and how big a Joe fan I am.  That being said, I want to give props again to Goldner and the Hasbro team for not forgetting about the guys who grew up with Joe in the 80s.  Hasbro could have easily launched a new cartoon for a new generation and forgotten about us fanboys now in our 30s who helped make G.I.JOE the success that it is.  Very classy move on the part of Hasbro and Goldner for never forgetting us old schoolers.  Hats off to you guys.

G.I.JOE: RESOLUTE clearly says to us, "Hey guys, look we what did the characters you grew up with and loved.  Look we they are up to today."

That's pretty much it for now.  Stay tuned for further Joe updates and I'll see what I can get.  I wouldn't be suprised if someone caught the animation on their cell phone and it appears on youtube.
