Comic Con Report 2008: It’s a War Zone at the Punisher Panel
By Edgar 'El Toro' Arce on July 25, 2008
I’m sitting inside the panel for Marvel’s Punisher’s War Zone and brotha….my legs are hurting! I’m just now relaxing here for the first time the entire day. Wow. Anyhow, I’m going to do my best to give you a play by play as to what I'm witnessing first hand and while sitting on my buns and chilling!

Now the one thing that is being stated here over and over like a mantra is that this is not a sequel and not a remake, but deals with Marvel’s Max series that fans are familiar with.

The cast comes out and looks pretty cool. The leading lady (Julie Benz) looks hot and, and the new Punisher (Ray Stevenson) looks like a bad ass Mr. Big from sex in the city…or maybe I’m just too frickin tired to notice the difference.

Marvel’s Max series is the focus of this new version because it’s ruthless, and ultra violent. According to the producer of the film, it takes place in New York, and Frank Castle has to look like he came out of the comic books and is also from New York. Of course we all know that all badass people come from NY so it only makes more sense.

Ray describes the new Punisher as being true to heart to the Max series. The main emphasis seems to be the fact that he’s not a superhero in terms of powers, but he is when it comes to being ruthless.

Now the moment every Punisher geek came to Comic Con for…..the trailer! Lion’s gate unveiled its new ultra violent hard R trailer. I got to say one thing to describe it. Macabre. The trailer looks hot!! There are noticeably more bright colors as is the usual recipe for Marvel films. It’s definitely not as dark visually as the Thomas Jane version. The sound itself was incredibly loud and would for sure give plenty of ear doctors a rise in appointments. The villain in this film looks creepy…a scarecrow looking man with huge grotesque stitches all around the face. It’s obviously reconstructed from some dubious accident that takes place.

It’s all mayhem Punisher style. I have to admit some of the shots we saw were down right gory. In one clip the Punisher is slamming the leg of a chair into someone’s face….completely crushing the head in. There are images of peoples heads blowing up into pieces, even faces ripped apart! And this is just the darn trailer. Well fans, you’ll definitely get a lot of one thing form this film…Bullets, bullets and more bullets. Add to that the image of the punisher on a swiveling chandelier while shooting his automatic weapons spraying like a lawn sprinkler in super slow motion……ahhhhh, I smell violence!!
