Remember that tweet by Production Weekly the other day, the one that said James Cameron was developing a sci-fi movie for FOX? This tweet, to be exact: "James Cameron is developing a Shane Salerno-scripted sci-fi action script for Fox, described as an "event" film set in the future." Well, everyone immediately assumed that said project was "Doomsday Protocol," which was described as a take on "The Seven Samurai."
Well, guess what:
It turns out that this is not the case. MTV News' Josh Horowitz spoke with Cameron and producer Jon Landau on the red carpet at the London premiere of "Avatar." The actual plan is to remake sci-fi classic "Fantastic Voyage," in 3-D, with Cameron taking on the role of producer.
In the original, a small team attempts to save the life of a nearly-assassinated diplomat through a uniquely invasive surgical procedure. The magic of science allows the doctors to be shrunken down to microscopic size and injected into the ailing diplomat's body. Piloting a specialized submersible craft -- also tiny -- the team attempts to repair with the diplomat's condition -- a blood clot in his brain -- on a cellular level.
Yes, it's a remake, which means that my first instinct is to greet it with hostility. But, such is the state of the film world. Maybe if every other project nowadays wasn't a re-something, it would be easier to welcome the potentially cool ones with open arms.
Anyway, this does sound decidedly less cool than "Doomsday Patrol." But, last time Cameron produced and did not direct a sci-fi movie, it was "Strange Days," which to me is an underrated slice of awesomeness. And with special effects the way they are today, I have no doubt that we will be thoroughly disgusted by huge, gross, realistic 3-D stomach acid.
This also reminds me of two other things: "Inner Space," which is also an underrated slice of awesomeness, and the motion ride "Body Wars," at Disney's Epcot Center in Orlando. Anyone ever ride that?
