Drew Barrymore's directorial debut is called Whip It, referring to a technique used by roller derby players to overtake the opposing team on the circular track.
I remember watching roller derby growing up (when they used to televise such events) and the women roller derby players were way more brutal than the men. These bitches took this shit seriously and fights were always breaking out, hair was always getting pulled and it was good times in the Roush household when we'd all sit and watch the carnage.
I'm hoping this will bring back some of that but it's Drew Barrymore directing and starring in it, so who knows. Plus she has Ellen Page in the movie to help lesbo things up.
USA Today has more:
"Everything I've learned throughout my whole life has been going into this piggy bank, and I just smashed it all over the floor for this one," she says.
The story of a young girl pushed in many different directions, and pushing back to find herself, is partly her own story as a child star who struggled in the transition to adulthood.
"I felt pressures that everybody feels, whether it's inter-office, in high school or a small town," Barrymore says. "Everyone relates to expectations others have or what the world thinks. Who am I going to become? What am I going to be in this world?"
You felt pressures that everybody feels? Every 13 year old has pressure but 99.9% of them don't deal with their pressure by snorting coke and going to rehab. Twice.
