Drag Me To Hell is Heaven for horror fans.
Tonight I saw an early screening of Drag Me To Hell, Sam Raimi's return to horror. Drag Me is the story of Christine (Alison Lohman), a bank loan officer trying to compete for a promotion at her job against a rival co-worker. To show her boss that she can make the tough decisions, she turns down an extension on an old lady's loan, causing her to lose her house. The woman, feeling shamed by what has happened, curses Christine. And it doesn't take long for the fireworks to begin.
I don't want to get into a lot of the story details. It's your basic, "spirit is after the victim" plot. The movie doesn't come out until May so they're still working on the CGI, audio, etc. So this isn't an official review, it's just my impressions of what I saw.
And what I saw kicked major ass. This is old school horror at its best. It's gory, scary, and a lot of fun to sit through. It reminded me of Sam's Evil Dead movies and even though I never jump during horror films, Sam got me not once, but twice. He uses the camera like its his personal playground, tricking your eyes into thinking everything is calm when it never is. As important as the camera work is, the audio is the real star of the movie. Escalating ominous musical notes and deafening sound effects kept me on the edge of my seat. At least I was having fun as I was getting the shit scared out of me. All in a PG-13 package (the movie has yet to be officially rated).
There are so many memorable scenes in the movie, with the car fight scene in the first act as one of the best. It's Sam's reminder to the audience that this isn't your average horror story, it's a Sam Raimi horror story. There are a lot of "What the fuck!" scenes in this movie. From the car fight to the graveyard to the séance, you're never, ever bored.
You know what I like best about Raimi's horror movies? The spirits in them don't mess around. There's none of this bullshit where we have to sit through twenty minutes of a woman watching dishes break and then we have to wait until the third act before we see how far the ghost is willing to go. Nope, not in a Raimi movie. Right off the bat, this is one pissed off spirit who does its best to scare the crap out of its victim by doing both emotional and physical harm. Raimi's horror spirits would kick the snot out of any of the pansy ass ghosts that had been trying to haunt theaters in the last ten years.
I'm really glad to see Sam's return to the genre that mad him famous. After his last Spider-Man film, I thought that maybe the big movie franchise had somehow diluted his storytelling skills and his ability with a camera, but it hasn't. This is his best work in years and every horror fan is going to love it. I'm not joking when I tell you it was one of the best times I had while watching a movie. The acting was great by both Alison and her on screen boyfriend played by Justin Long, the direction was superb, the story was fun and the scares were a plenty. After the film I even got to shake Sam's hand and tell him what a fantastic job he did.
I know it doesn't come out until May, but I wrote this because I wanted you guys to get pumped up for it early. This movie never, ever slows down and fans of the Evil Dead series can breathe a sigh of relief that one of their favorite horror directors is back. Sam Raimi can Drag Me To Hell anytime he wants. I promise not to resist.
Don't open the gates of Hell! Make sure you

I'll go, even solo - no need to drag me to a theatre... Will see it on the big screen FIRST! and only there. The Evil Dead (1981) was the first of the few that have ever got me startled. So, welcome back Sam!

PG-13 MTV style horror flicks are trash and Raimi is as overrated as the Evil Dead flicks.

This guy does some seriously entertaining horror. This is the 2nd review I've read tonight about the screening, and from what I've read so far, I'm in.
