El Mayimbe here...
So the question that has been on everybody's mind, is Platinum Dunes Freddy a child molester?
Tune in below to find out in our latest First Look episode as I was able to take a peek at the draft by Wesley Strick with current revisions done by Eric Heisserer. Heisserer sold a spec "The Dionaea House" to the WB back in 2005.
The original "Nightmare" was written and directed by Wes Craven and released in 1984. The new project will keep the high school setting and delve deeper in the psychology of nightmares and Freddy Krueger himself.
Exec produced by Kellvin, narrated by Edgar "El Toro" Arce, and edited by Stuart Benedict. We also hope you enjoy our snazzy new video player.

Much better than the last video, good job. Now all you need to do is get a less monotome guy to do the reading and it'll be perfect. But top notch effects, good content, etc.

Commented By: mad on 2009-03-25 21:59:50
They better have him where a sweater without stripes on the sleeves! Whoever did his costume for part two set a trend that everyone followed. Do your homework. Freddy does not have stripes on his sleeves in the original.

I'm always scoping the net for news such as this. I for one greatly appreciated the presentation that was offered to break this news. You guys obviously put a ton of work into it. The quality was excellent too. I'll keep my eyes open for the rest of your video content.
As for the Nightmare one Elm Street remake, I think it's in capable hands. Platinum Dunes has had some solid remakes with Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th, so I have no doubt that there streak is going to continue with this film.

This new “director†needs to take a couple steps back and think what he’s doing. Freddy is Robert Englund. He is the ICON of freddy. You can’t replace an icon. Many people want to see a new freddy because Robert became funny and not as scary but hello he has always been freddy and can still be scary he did them all. He can still act too. I think freddy being funny was a good catch to it but you can be funny and scary at the same time. So “Mr. big shot†thinking you can replace Robert think again

I am not in agreement with the producers, nightmare in the street elm seems to me that she is one of cecuelas but important in the terror cinema as well as he is it fredy and with this I say that if we changed fredy and its form to act is not going to be the same Robert must be fredy always was it and for my goes always it, the producers do not realize that with this change the only thing which they obtain is to lose money…

Child Molester?!! If they make Freddy a child molester that would be so stupid! How can a fan root for a homicidal maniac that touches kids? I love Freddy and that would make liking this character impossible. Oh and if he doesn't talk much and have that twisted witty personality then he'll just be Jason with a glove.

The fucker has never been able to act. He's a campy, ham-fisted actor. He was better when he wasn't supposed to be cracking jokes the whole time. Fucker became a parody of himself. They need to wipe the slate completely clean.

Commented By: elliott on 2009-03-26 20:59:46
I honestly don't understand why there always has to be a MOTIVE for why a killer kills people in a movie. Not knowing sometimes allows for an even greater apprehension. When you can't figure out why someone wants to kill somebody else it's a little more fucked up in my opinion. Everything has to have an answer in Hollywood. I can't believe Englund is not returning to play Freddy but I honestly think that Christopher Heyerdahl can pull it off. *sigh* I just don't know what to think.

Why?
Commented By: A FUTURE DIRECTOR! on 2009-03-27 07:07:12
Why do this outside of making money. Friday the 13th was more of a parody/comedy then a horror movie and even though i liked what they did with Leatherface in TCM, I still think TCM and The Hills Have Eyes were shell's of their former selves. Lets face it people, we'll go see it and we'll hate it and they'll bank for it. Sad times we live in people.

Great work on the video and thanks for keeping us all informed as to whats going one of our most beloved movie maniacs. Based on what your reporting, i think its awesome that they are adding the plausibility that Freddy might've never been a molester and was framed. It a nice approach to his origin. I am really looking forward to seeing how it all comes together, hopefully we'll get a 'Chainsaw Massacre' type remake and not a 'Friday the 13th'.

Freddy not talking = yeah
on 2009-04-02 23:22:15
For those of us who love the first movie, Freddy does not talk much. So, it would be fitting. It's a hell of a lot scary for a silent stalker than someone who craks a bunch of one liners. Don't get me wrong, I loved what Robert did with the personality, but Freddy was scarier in the first film becuase he did not talk much..

If he IS a child molestor, I want no part of it. Had they left that in the original, I doubt seriously there ever would have been more than one, and "Freddy" wouldn't exist. The character was just stronger for it's exclusion. That said, if it turns out he was falsely accused in this new film, at least that's palatable. I agree with a previous poster, this obsession with "plausible motivation" is frustrating. It's already ruined the Halloween franchise... And goth Nancy is, say, ten years too late as a compelling concept.

Oh, not this child molestor thing again. Do people really think that's scarier than someone who chooses to frighten and kill children just for the fun of it? It just sounds like lazy writing to me... in much the same way that in film these days any two people of the same gender who are close HAVE to be in a homosexual relationship, any time an adult menaces a child they MUST be sexually assaulting them. Why? How is that more compelling? It's writing without thought. Perhaps this one might be better avoided.

"freddy has ALWAYS been a child molester, this was stated in the original film."
No, it wasn't.
"He was a filthy child murderer."
Are you guys not aware that in the script for this movie, Freddy does not kill a SINGLE child before he is burned alive?
You're telling me that someone who goes out specifically to capture and MURDER children is less evil than a guy who wants to molest them? Are you kidding me?
It is a shame that Freddy's origin has now descended into the realm of cliche, just like poor Michael Myers with his remake. A child molester. Seriously.
There are tons of child molesters walking the streets today. Tons. They even have their own little group. It is nothing new, nothing unique, and nothing that ever needed to be brought into the Freddy Krueger films.
I'm happy that so many of you think that this is going to be great, but you could not be more wrong. With or without Englund, the script for this film is bland to the extreme, and it is terribly unfortunate that Freddy Krueger, one of (if not THE) the greatest villains of all time is being reimagined into this piece of shit film.
Thanks a lot, Platinum Dunes. You guys show time and time again that the best thing you could do for the horror genre that you claim to love is just leave it the hell alone.

Robert Englund is FREDDY. Replacing Freddy is worse than replacing Stallone as Rocky. It's like changing the voice of Darth Vader.....a complete mistake! While Englund is alive, he'll always be Freddy and anything else will just be weak.

Let the actors decide
Commented By: BK on 2009-04-24 21:25:08
Wes Craven had a great idea with the first film, the next seven or eight killed it. If they are going to re-make it, Englund shouldn't be Freddy, it should all be fresh. I haven't seen Watchmen so I don't know how JEH has developed as an actor, but I heard he stole the movie. I decided to let the movie impress me instead of having preconceived notions after Michael Keaton was cast as Batman in 1989. I thought that had to be a terrible mistake, but Keaton did a fantastic job and actually didn't let Nicholson steal all the thunder. Lets just judge this on it's own merit without prejudice.

It adds to the story.
Commented By: TheMadness on 2009-05-15 01:49:34
First and foremost, this is not a remake. It is a revision of the entire franchise. Hence the name Nightmare On Elm St, and not the original A Nightmare On Elm St. by Wes Craven. That fact alone should foreshadow that it will not be original. Now take into context the fact that he is JUST a child molester working as a school groundskeeper which gives him the ability to be around children daily. Freddy not having killed anyone before, specifically children; has to have had something happen to him that pissed him off to the point of manifesting himself into a dimension where he can brutally murder the now grown children in their nightmares. That adds a lot of passion to freddy's back story if you think about it instead of him being a killer from the start. Its one thing to molest a child, but going from that to brutally gutting them in their dreams. Something really ticked him off. I would hold out for this one.
|
And what if he is?!
Commented By: JR on 2009-06-10 10:22:14
Im hearing a lot of disinterest in the fact that Freddy's a child molester. He's not supposed to be a loveable character, he's supoosed to be the most evil entity known to man. A child molester is seen as just that to normal decent human beings. Also, they mention that their is speculation that he may originally, not have been a molester, instead just the blame subject in an entirely larger picture of taboo family violence. I think I'd be pissed if I was wrongfully accused of something like child molestation. So, if you're still looking to like our villain Freddy, you may have an opportunity to somewhat sympathize with him anyway.
