Exclusive: DC Comics President Gives Superman Update

By Kellvin Chavez on October 09, 2008
Exclusive: DC Comics President Gives Superman Update The only thing better than living in New York, is being at a party in New York. I was out on the town this past Monday night with my partners in crime El Mayimbe and Ron Henriques at the special WATCHMEN presentation that was scheduled for a hand full of media outlets. The footage we watched to me was very good. It had its moments. I definitely believe just like SIN CITY, you will either love it or hate it. I loved the opening sequence explaining the creation and the rise of the Minutemen, which quite frankly blew me away! It was that good. And honestly while I’ve never read the book, I must say I was inspired to immediately go out and buy one just so I am up to speed.

Anyhow, the real action didn’t happen inside the screening, but rather outside of it. While mingling around with guest and watching my partner in crime sneak food into his Latin pockets, I saw the one and only Paul Levitz, the President of DC Comics.   I walked over to him and had a moment to hang out and chat with him briefly. I could not keep my mouth shut and had to ask the questions that Latino readers are asking. So I went in straight for the kill.

“So Paul, what the fuck is happening with Superman?” Well not in those words actually.  Paul looked over both shoulders like he was about to score some basura and said that things are still brewing.

In fact, he told me that “Last week Brandon Routh has come around the offices in New York and Los Angeles as of late to talk about Superman and what we want to do”……blah blah blah!

At first I thought it was the Apple Martini I was drinking but I soon realized that I just heard a bombshell go off in my brain! Brandon? He did say Brandon Routh was coming around talking about Superman! Why the hell would they be talking to Brandon if he was not going to be part of the reboot? Because he’s still in the mix!!!

The truth of the matter is that the way Mr. Levitz made it seem is that they love Brandon as Clark Kent and that he’s just a great guy, which I agree.  I mean remember we at Latino Review told EVERYONE he was going to be the next Superman.

At that point my instincts kicked in and I continued with the questions. “What about Batman 3? You guys must be going crazy over the success of that film.” Paul pulls the cocktail shrimp from his mouth just enough to see him smile. I asked when were they going to get this Superman reboot done and he gave me a look like he was about to tell me the answers to the mysteries of the world. “Everyone is waiting for Nolan to sign on for another Batman, once that happens, the release date for Superman and all other future projects will follow.”

I could not believe my ears! Not only did my partner in crime blast wind next to me, but basically Superman’s future hangs in the balance until we have a concrete signature on the Batman contracts! The party was getting good, and the drinks were flowing making this just as easy as prom night picking. So I pressed with my questions. “What about Green Lantern and Supermax? How is that moving along?” Paul continued that Green Lantern was actually moving faster than Supermax, which to me makes sense because the Green Lantern script was badass!! If you do not remember the review we did, here it is again. The party went into the night, and the drinks continued to flow, finally I knew I had to leave as soon as my partner in crime started to stumble all over the place, looking kind of green in the face.

As of now just a few moments ago another inside source confirmed that yes they are waiting for Chris Nolan to sign the deal with the next Batman, and that they want him to commit to a July 2011 release.  If that happens then the following superhero films will be released.

Green Lantern Summer 2010
Batman 3 Summer 2011
New Superman reboot Summer 2012

Also in the mix is THE FLASH.

I was wondering the same thing. Is this going to be a reboot or not? Because it doesn't make any damn sense if Routh is returning for a reboot.

Its a full reboot, but whether or not they will start from like the beginning all over again like how he came here and all, that I hope they don't do cause WE ALL KNOW HIS ORIGIN story already.
I hope Routh is back.
Commented By: Mike on 2008-10-09 18:48:00
It could actually be like Wrath of Kahn, where they have the same main actors, but a completely different storyline, like as if the first movie never happened. Though, I doubt Bosworth and the others will return. And why not have Routh back? The general public will be confused anyway with a new Superman reboot movie coming out only a few years after SR? So what do they have to lose by having him return?
What bombshell?
Commented By: EL Juapo on 2008-10-09 19:07:30
They had him come in to tell him that he was not going to be Superman anymore on the big screen. Routh is NEVER playing Superman again! PERIOD!

Who hated Sin City, exactly? And why do I have to read these lame "Watchman will be a movie you either love or hate" predictions from everyone. That isn't exactly going out on a limb - it's a known fact that people tend to either love or hate most films without much middle ground. Please come up with something original and/or actually insightful from time to time.
it needs a reboot?
Commented By: ts on 2008-10-09 23:45:32
I liked that movie.. and my girlfriend loved it. It maybe wasn't the best movie ever made... but it seemed better than the majority of superhero movies.. and it got generally favorable reviews. Was it a big flop then? I wish they' have kept going with it in parallel to batman... leading to a Dark Knight Returns style crossover.

I don't get the idea of a reboot with routh. If they were going to do a REAL reboot they should have had a different cast and actor for Superman. Bad idea WB.

Yay!! I Soo Hope this is true! I LOVE Brandon Routh as Superman/Clark, I REALLY want him to return to reprise the role of Supes in the next movie. Singer definitely found the right guy for the job. Routh is IT. If he doesn't return, I won't pay to watch the next S movie, as simple as that. I soo wish they made a sequel, cuz I LOVED Superman Returns, but I could live with a reboot, reimagining, or whatever, IF Routh returns.

Yes!

Judi Dench is stil M
Commented By: garzo on 2008-10-10 05:16:53
It's like Judi Dench still playing M in the new Daniel Craig Bond universe. It makes no sense - the series gets a massive reboot, Bond goes back to his younger days, reality becomes more gritty and realistic, and M ages more than a decade and remains the same character from the Brosnan universe, but no one blinks. It'd be like just like getting Alan Napier to play Alfred alongside Christian Bale.
"No!" to reboot! "YES!" to Routh!
Commented By: Otis on 2008-10-10 05:24:58
Routh got enthusiastic approval from most of people who saw SR, including long-time Superman fans and the most critical critics. It'll be such a waste if he won't be able to come back as THE Superman of 21st century. And I don't see why WB has to reboot the film which wasn't a 'big failure'. it might have not made as much money as they had hoped, but it still did achieved the respectable box office performance and definitely did made a strong impression on people as "Return of Superman' after 20 years, even to people who did not see the film. Their idea of making a Batman-like Superman only because Batman franchise was more successful doesn't sound very clever and downright risky. It would make much more sense to make a sequel with some improvement of some factors that some fans weren't very happy about in SR. Bring Routh Back.!! .....and NO REBOOT!!!

I don't care if it's a reboot or just a sequal as long as Routh is brought back, and they dump Bosworth for someone else more spunky, sexy and with a few pounds on her to play Lois Lane. Plus, it MUST have someone other than Luthor as the villian and needs much more action. I say bring on Braniac. If they want an overall darker film that's fine as long as they don't darken Superman's character. Give him more confidence & optimism than in 'SM Returns'. I just don't know how you handle the Superkid without a reboot. I hated that plot line. However they handle it, I'll be there opening weekend.

Reboot or Slick Continuation?
Commented By: RA LaMothe on 2008-10-10 09:30:01
My idea would be to open the new film with flash scenes from Superman Returns, then fade out and fade back in to Superman's face under the influence of the Black Mercy; its tentacles deep into SM's subconscious creating that imperfect world in his mind. Pan out to view Superman standing in place with the Black Mercy on him in the center of a large chamber and Brainiac sitting behind him in a techno-like throne, grinning. Then the film goes back maybe a week or two and we see how Superman got into this predicament and how Brainiac got onto the scene. What do you all think?
Please Don't Bring Routh Back!
Commented By: Mike on 2008-10-10 09:31:53
I agree with G. Why would they bring Brandon back as Clark/Superman if this is going to be a reboot? I don't get it. If this is going to be a reboot like the WB said, then the entire cast should be different. If Routh is coming back to the reboot as Superman, that is a very stupid idea. I for one hated Superman Returns. It was a ridiculous movie. The addition of the kid, the costume, Kate Botsworth portrayal of Lois, etc. were awful. They were absolutely awful. I was initially pleased to hear that they were going to be rebooting Superman, seeing how poor Superman Returns was done by Bryan Singer. I always said (and will continue to say) that if Superman were done correctly it would have taken the number one spot away from Titanic. However, Returns had a combined 25 minutes of action in a 2 and a half hour long movie. It was so slow and boring at times. I hope they don't bring back Routh, he was just to stiff as both Clark and Superman. Christopher Reeves Clark was extremely clumsy and silly acting, Brandon's was not. WB, if you are reading this; please don't bring back Routh. If this is going to be a reboot (which I hope it is) bring on a whole new cast. Also, please don't bring back Singer as director. He was terrible.

I say bring back Singer, bring back Routh, and do a kick-ass sequel. SR was excellent, and I still don't understand all the hate it receives. It may not have had wall to wall action, but it was top notch and it established the characters so now a more action focused sequel can follow...I really hope they stick with the creative team they assembled for he first one.

Commented By: cbk on 2008-10-10 09:47:27
It's just that the people who hated SR have been more vocal than people who liked it, as it's always the case with anything else. Complainers tend to have louder voice. If you look at the reviews by professional film critics, the laaaaaaaaaaarge majority of them were very positive about SR. WB shouldn't ignore this fact.

"SR" Sucked sooo badly! So speaking for myself, & all other true Superman fans...PLEASE reboot this franchise! Roth was ok as Supes..., but buff him up a bit, give him the modern day comics Superman look...instead of trying to make a Christopher Reeve(RIP) look a like And PLEASE change the costume!! Also.., the kid has got to go!! Also, they should introduce Darkseid, Doomsday, or another supervillian that he can trade punches with to the big screen.
NO REBOOT!
Commented By: Allen on 2008-10-10 10:11:07
Before Superman Returns, I could hardly consider myself a Superman fan. SR is what gave me my current obsessive love for the Superman character along with the mythos. Brandon Routh is the defining Superman of out generation and I couldn't picture anyone else in those tights. SR was just an establishment into the Superman universe, and the sequel could put all these characters into the wildest situations that are possibly imaginable. We don't want to see Superman reboot, we want to see it continue.
Do SR2 with same crew!
Commented By: druhoags on 2008-10-10 10:12:34
SR2 should follow suit with SR, but not with the slow pacing. It was necessary to reestablish some of the background in SR, but we got it... I think Singer knows that and has some good things in store for SR2, like Superman's son getting killed and much more action. He deserves the chance to get more out of his vision. Superman is not something that we just say "reboot" to on a whim.

You call yourselves fans of comic book movies, but you wait 'til now to friggin' read Watchmen? I'm not asking you guys to become lexicons of dork data, but at least act like you know how to do your jobs, which clearly, you don't. You guys preface most of your articles with "well I don't know crap about the source material, but here's the scoop on the film adaptation of it" I won't deny that you guys can get scoops, and pretty good ones sometimes, but I don't know how you do because you certainly aren't competent journalists; it seems like you just get access to industry parties and hassle people 'til you get information, information you never seem to do any research on beyond "this guy told me this, but I don't know what that means", you ask about Superman, get the Routh bombshell, and because you seem to lack the intuitive ability to process conversational information you don't follow it up with "so is this still going to be a reboot" you follow it with a non-sequitor about Batman. Finally, you dick heads get drunk at press parties, I am endlessly astonished that you guys get any news because besides your utter ignorance of most nearly everything and your constant un-researched editorializing , you guys seem to act like total fucking imbeciles.

There has been a lot of talk about a Superman Reboot and quite frankly I couldn't agree more. The only thing good about Superman Returns was that it honored the Christopher Reeve films,,,,thats it!! Everything else stunk...the costume looked like shite, the plot line with the kid was a terrible idea and enough with the saviour shots! I just wanted to see Superman PUNCH something!! Bring in Tom Welling to play the part, be honest to who the character is and bring on the action.

The new Superman should be to SR what Wrath of Khan was to ST:the motion picture. Just move on, up the pace and tell us a SUPERMAN movie. So, bring on the bad guys. And for the love of Zod, look to the COMICS for inspiration... tamper with the mythos at your peril.
2012
on 2008-10-10 11:32:36
In Superman Returns Routh looked really young. He didn't look young in just everyday photos I seen of him, but for some reason in the film he did. By 2012 I believe that he would have a much more matured look about him, and fit the role of Supes even better! I'm excited. Hopefully they release it before December 2012 though, that way in case all the bs about the end of the world happens to be true at least we can see another Superman movie.
Kate Bosworth
Commented By: Brett on 2008-10-10 13:18:11
Best Lois Lane on film. Ever. If you're going to bring back Routh, bring back Bosworth. Ignore everything else that occurred in "Superman Returns." Though, if you do decide to reboot with a different cast, I'm not going to lose sleep over it. Brandon Routh played Superman in one movie; he's not the "defining" Superman for a generation. Neither is Tom Welling - he plays a rather wussy Clark on Smallville, and while I like the show, I like it because it's not Superman and this guy would never become Superman. Something drastic will have to happen to him either at the end of the series or after the series to make him the Superman we all know and love.

Reboot? Nuts
Commented By: Fike on 2008-10-10 14:30:12
A Superman Reboot is not really that needed. Just becasue WB didn't recieve a lage amount of box office money, they automatically think its sucks, then you have individuals who just agree with whatever they see or hear. How many years was it when they made another Sups movie? From what i recall, its been like 20 years, yea it didn't make a large amount of money but look at batman begins. It was 8 years before they made another Batman movie, and Begins made (in world wide box office) LESS than Superman Returns!!!!! God! Common ppl. Brian Singer is a director and he didn't write the scrip, so if you have a problem with the scrip don't sit there and blame Singer on it! Brian Singer- X Men, X Men 2, they were great!!! No Brian Singer for X-Men 3 and owch, that movie i thought was gone with the wind. Disappointment. No Reboot. Sorry for the length of this. Yea i really liked Superman Returns.
There is a reason SR is in the bargain bin!
Commented By: Philvis on 2008-10-10 17:07:34
Plain and simple, SR was a boring homage to Donner's universe that utterly failed. Between the lack of chemistry with EVERY character and the poor storyline and writing, a reboot like Robinov mentioned is the only way to save the Superman franchise. Routh will NOT be in the reboot, and I hate to break the news to the Singerman's out there about that. If a reboot is done, which Robinov confirmed, they are not going to start fresh with the star of the previously failed "revival" film. Routh is not Superman. He does a decent Reeve Clark impression, but that is all. He lacks the size and presence that Superman requires of an actor. Let him stick to dress up at Halloween parties, because he is not going to be making any other Superman films. The closest he will get is if they interview him for a documentary of some sort. Long live a new Superman that starts fresh. If you can get my email address to Brandon Routh, please let him know I have some yard work and deck repairs I need done and I pay a fair rate.

I want Warner to have little to do with anything to do with Superman Returns.Such a very lame movie.Poor chemistry between protagonists, and no real threat. They fight over real estate.Come on! Nothing new nor fresh and lacking vision.Over 250 million us to hack a film form the 70-ties.No wonder world wide it was not received too enthusiastically. My concern is if they keep Routh who is a very so-so Superman, when the JLA film comes on stream we know who will steal the show!!!Yep you got it.Batman.Bale is such a good actor and Routh is just bland in front of him.Get a guy who actually oozes charisma. There will only ever be ONE Chris Reeve and it is time to stop getting people who are poor replicas of him.Get someone with a new look who can redefine Superman for this generation.

A truly heart and souless thing for Warner's and DC to do would be to reboot SUPES. OK, so RETURNS wasn't the action extravaganza that most had hoped for. They were taking a film franchise that had been under a rock for almost 20 years and giving it a fresh polish while paying homage to the original series and re-establishing the characters for a new generation. That's alot of responsibility as a filmmaker and I believe Singer and crew pulled it off. Give that fucker back to Singer and crew and let them have another crack at it. Singer even said it himself that he would make the follow up punchier and more action oriented. And why wait for a 3rd. BATMAN to schedule the others? Because they want to "keep the dark tone" and follow Nolan's lead? What fucking garbage. All I gotta say is that these two companies are really dragging ass and making big mistakes. Wake up!!

It may be tit for tat, but really. Robinov never said "reboot." You can reintroduce an audience to a character by giving them a sequel after a period of time, after they seem to clamor for it. The demand goes back up. Here's hoping that ROUTH IS BACK and that they'll make the RIGHT CHOICE and bring SINGER BACK TOO for a true sequel!!!

Ok, Superman needs to be a complete reboot, don't half- ass it and add on to the train wreck that is Superman Returns. No disrespect, but it SR was not what fans wanted! Brandon Routh had his chance and it going to be hard for fans to watch him again. Tom Welling is the New Superman, give him a chance. 8 seasons of Smallville, people already see him as Superman, the only returning cast member that should be a part of Superman is Kevin Spacey. And if he does not want to return, then Michael Rosenbaum is just around the corner.
Please get this one right

Singer Get lost
Commented By: Arthur R on 2008-10-12 00:45:19
While I am a big Supes fan, i'll be the first to admit that SR should never have been done, it should have been a reboot from the begining the Superman comics have advance far enough that the previous movie's universe was just too dated to begin with. But I have to say the greatest mistake is allowing Brian Singer near any comic adaptation movie at all. I know they wanted to adapt these movies like the X-men's and Supes for people who aren't really into the comics, but they're changing the characters and their dinamics too far from what they were meant too be. The reason BB and DK have won such acceptance is because they are the first Batman movies to hold true to what Batman was always supposed to be.The only others that were even close were the keaton movies. So while I'm fine with Routh for the LOVE OF GOD get a new director, hopefully one who can remain true to what Supes is supposed to be.

I actually thought Brandon Routh was terrible as Superman, he did not have the same goofy charm that Christopher Reeves had. The y need to do some serious changes to the next superman to have it be something amazing. I say use Smallville's Tom Welling, get a new direstor like Nolan, a new cast with talent, and stay true to the Superman Comic. DO NOT USE BRANDON ROUTH!
Who cares?

I don't care if they bring BR again or go with TW or anybody else. As long as they come up with a movie that is fine with me. Either a reboot or sequel. I am just a Superman fan. But if they go with a sequel, please get rid of the kid in the first five minutes of the film. Sent him to summer camp or better yet, kill the mf. And secondly change that ridicolous costume, it's just to lame.At least we got rid of the writters who are in big part responsible for all this mess. At least they were smart enough to leave before they got fired from this production. I never had confidence in those two from the beginning.

Routh was ok as Superman, but JUST ok. If they've got someone else in the wings (besides Nicolas Cage) then I say give 'em a shot at it. More importantly, hire some writers. SR was little more than an uninspired remake of the original Superman film with the needless Superboy plot shoehorned into it. Throw all that out and give us something new. Lex Luthor doesn't have to be in every movie. I'm pulling for Brainiac myself -- the Brainiac we saw in Justice League Unlimited, the cartoon that was a gigawatt brighter than the SR flick. Not interested in General Zod and Company. Wouldn't mind Metallo. If you want to really go all out, give us Darkseid Inc. But Lex has had his day in the (red) sun.

Tom Welling should be Superman

But it would have to have the rest of the cast of Smallville as well (i.e., Erica Durance as Lois, Aaron Ashmore as Jimmy, Alison Mack as Chloe, even Justin Hartley as Ollie Queen / Green Arrow). But I think it would be a great movie. It was done with the X Files and it can be done with Smallville, which is a Superman show (Bryan Singer said the reason that he did not use the Smallville cast for his movie is because he was doing a Superman movie, not a Smalliville movie).

WB and DC folks, we superhero fans love Superman more than even Batman, Spiderman, Green Lantern and this time you please get your acts together for a good Superman reboot as soon as possible and don't let any wannabe director like Singer take control of the legend. New Superman movies will come out as the best superhero flicks if you give this legend a good script with bad-ass super villains and an entertaining/intense plot.. SR was a bad movie with a bad plot and a soap-opera feeling. I also don't care if Brandon will come back or not but anyway he wasn't that bad either but maybe we need to forget EVERYTHING about SR now. GIVE US A NEW SUPERMAN REBOOT..................CRAZY SUPERHERO FANS FROM CHINA, JAPAN, ITALY AND INDIA

Sorry, but a white boy has infiltrated a latino review site! I came for the Super news but would love to leave with some of your chicas! Seriously though, Routh is Superman! Dana Reeves gave her approval, and Christopher Reeves loved her, so I am sure he would have given his approval as well to pass the torch over to him! I can't believe people blame Routh for the flop that was Superman Returns! He didn't write the script. Remember the old saying, "Don't kill the Messenger"? The writers and the director are to blame! I just hope that Kate Bosworth bulks up a little if she returns. She is way too scrawny for Lois Lane. She didn't have an @$$ or hoo-hoos! From her backside it looked like someone kicked her but up into her shoulder blades! And her Hoo Hoos looked like tose of a pre pubescent 11 year old girl. Flat is not good for the female Heineken or hoosers! Someone posted somewhere that Megan Fox should be cast. Bad choice. Although she can break this boys achy breaky hard... er I mean heart any day, She is too gorgeous to play Lois. People wouldn't buy it because Lois Lane is not a bimbo, therefore no Pamela Anderson's allowed! She needs to be sexy, not bimboliscious! There is a difference. You need to be able to look at her and imagine youself not only checking her out, but also being able to have a conversation with her! Back in her day, Julia Roberts would have been an awesome Lois Lane. Someone close to her style should play Lois Lane in my book! I think Lex will be okay in the film as long as they incorporate the real worlds new philosophy that Real Estate can ruin the economy, not make it rich. You know what my daddy always told me Lex? No, not get out. He said " Dex, No matter what, people will always need Land, but you know what they will need more? Food. People will always need food." Get out of the real estate biz, Lex! Try a restaraunt instead! Seriously, I think Lex Needs to dupe the world into thinking he has reformed, build his empire like in the comics how he is a multi billionaire. Lex is not an idiot like he is in the movie versions!
Beautiful visuals

I loved Superman Returns even if it is considered a flop. Though the story with Richard White and the kid could have been omitted ( I think the film would have been adored if they were never in the film), visually the film is breath taking. I would have loved to have seen the Christopher Reeve films done in this style of cinematography that Singer chose to do SR in. The camera work, the Visual effects and special effects made it awe inspiring to me. And I loved the score to the film. The music was the same, but yet different. I particularly loved the music that played when Superman Flew Lois back to the Daily planet. They used the Original Superman film theme throughout the film, but gave him a new theme as well. Excellently done and a very nice take on it. And if they are using Routh to do a reboot which is a sort of prequel to SR, Remember this, DC and Warner Executives. You have to put him back in the Christopher reeve styled suit. After all, in SR, his costume was brand new. When Perry held his first meeting about how every story is "Superman" he asked, "Where has he been? Is that a new suit"? To put him in the Superman Returns suit when you say it is a reboot would give all the naysayers reasons to complain that, " If this is supposed to when Supermans story begins, which would make it before Superman Returns, then why did he have the SR style Superman suit?" Make it right. Don't give the biz-nitches reasons to moan!

How about some decent villians?
Commented By: Ryan on 2008-10-14 11:51:09
The biggest reason in my mind why SR sucked so much was because here you have just about the strongest guy in the universe, with pretty much every super power you can imagine, and who was his nemesis? A pathetic demented real estate agent! C'mon ppl, Lex Luther should be a high powered, genius multi billionare! I've always thought a good villian makes a good hero (just check out the latest batman) so please, Doomsday or Darkseid, or even a rebooted LL would make for a much better action based storyline

I don't really give a crap who plays Superman as long as the script is kick ass and Tom Welling is NOWHERE near this film. Routh was pretty good as Supes, I guess. But he needs to blow us away this time if he wants the big money in his future.

I dont really care as long as it interesting and good. SR was alright, it was just a way of getting superman back out there and they just threw the wrong pitch is all. I personally like the idea of tom welling just becuz after watching smallville, its wierd seeing someone else as clark kent... so im biased. I like Kevin Spacey and he could do any Lex they wanted, however, I'd like to see Lex Luthor be younger and darker... Michael Rosenbaum (sp?) fits the role so well, he would be perfect for Lex Luthor in my opinion. He just has that look in his eyes when he played Lex in smallville, its like he was born for the role... but a slight reboot would prly be best, just stick more to the comics. oh and bring brainiac into the mix!!

We need the same kickass rewrite that Batman got ... And it wouldn't hurt if an actor could kill themselves as a result of a self-disturbing performance.
Hell no to Routh
Commented By: Donnie in Dallas on 2008-10-19 19:23:51
Routh was one of the main reasons why SR failed so miserably. We need an actor to portray the man of steel. Not some chris reeve mini-me close doing his sub-par impersonation of reeve. Routh was pathetic in the role of superman. Singer totally screwed up everything else in the movie. Reboot and recast the whole franchise. I could even live with all the previous cast as long as routh isn't part of it. But I still prefer recasting and rebooting all of superman. For God sakes WB, get it right this time. If Brandon Routh is recast, you won't see me nor my box office dollar WB!
Welling is the man for the role
Commented By: Brandon on 2008-10-19 19:35:29
I would have to throw my support behind Tom Welling for the next superman movie. He has the face and build to play superman. If he is not cast, then I would be happy with anyone who can reasonably play the role and physically play the role. Anyone but Brandon Routh! He is by far the whimpiest, most feminine actor to fit into the cape and tights. He has no business being cast in that role. Jimmy Olsen would most likely be the best role for him in another superman movie. Best thing is to reboot with an entire new cast.... welling or not.
Go Tom Welling!

Routh had no charisma as Kent and Supes. I watched the original Superman movies enough to make me as crazy as Trekkies. In SR not only Kent was barely existant, even Lois treats him like trash. And as Superman, what a wuss. Reeves was charismatic as both Kent and Supes. He played both roles smartly. Christopher Reeves gave his approval to Tom Welling. And so will I. At least we know what he can do already. Go Welling!. And change directors.
New Age already

Oh! Come on people!! Get over it! There will not be a C Reeves as Superman anymore. and stop with his clones already. He was the defining Superman of the last generation and we should leave it at that and pay respects to him. It's a new generation and the defining Superman to this generation is Tom Welling. Or someone that can add new sense to the story. Not some wannabe.
Bring Routh Back
on 2008-10-22 19:45:26
Look, bringing Superman back wouldn't have been easy task for any director but Singer did it with style and yes, there is a lack of action but he reestablished the characters to a new generation and even though the Christopher Reeve movies are old hat to us, they are considered classic and is still the yardstick for Superhero movies, even Nolan has said it himself when he spoke about Superman the Movie.

Singer left a lot of doors open for a kiss ass supervillain to come into play, and give Routh a break, a lot of his earlier scenes were cut from the movie to shorten it, Singer's bad, he should have left them in instead of focuing on Lex, unless he thought he incorporate in the sequel, anyway Brandon did a great job with what he had, I want to see him back in the suit!!!

It's creepy reading a bunch of people love Brandon Routh when Tom Welling is the right age for a reboot, and he has a following which happens to coincide with the end of the tv series. I thought that the Returns film was good, but not great, and Routh was the reason. I thin he probably is a great guy, he's just not Superman.
Encouraging news!

I enjoyed Superman Returns a great deal. Thought it was a beautiful, poetic and very meaninful movie. Saw it in theaters like 5 times, which I never did with any other movie before! Great film that honoured the legend and myth that is Superman, but the thing that I enjoyed the most in the film was without a doubt newcomer Mr. Brandon Routh. I so hope he returns to play the role again. It belongs to him now.

I was disappointed to hear that there is no Superman movie with Routh in 2009. The pendulum is swing and I think in a year or two the concept of punching a whole in the darkness theme in the Superman Returns movie will be seen as being way ahead of time and ahead of the curve. Sorry Joker- I dont believe in nihilism and chaos as our fate. I saw Superman Returns movie 7 times because it was the light at the end of the long dark tunnel we were in as a society. I think that the Dark Knight theme that its darkest before the dawn was right and perhaps Batman will come out into the light of the dawn.

Get a different Lois Lane for sure. Megan Fox is HOT, but I think there could be better Lois's, like maybe the love interest in Pearl Harbor? I don't know here name, but she was Lois Lane. Routh is awesome. I don't know how you would reboot this without seeming a bit redundant. I don't think I can stand to wait 4 years just to see the origin again, and then wait years again to see a new story. I know I'll enjoy it, but I'm ready for a good Superman movie now. I am totally opposed to using Tom Welling in a Superman movie. That show is totally missing the point of Superman. How anti-climactic can you possibly be? A Superman that doesn't look or sound like Superman that NEVER wears his suit and flies? That's the whole payoff, the whole reason for watching. I just can't spend my valuable time sitting through that TV show.
