Exclusive: First Watchmen Readers Review!

Exclusive: First Watchmen Readers Review! Kellvin here giving the Latino Review readers what they are accustomed to around here, some breaking news!

One of our faithful followers last night got to see the final cut of the highly anticipated film "Watchmen," in Los Angeles.

I am hoping this movie is going to be huge. When I first heard about it; I have to admit I had not read the graphic novel. So like the true student of the film that I am, I went out and did my research by purchasing a copy my hard earned dinero!

The book was awesome, and he first thing I thought was “How are they going to pull this off?” its no wonder why this film could not be done 20 years ago. There just was not enough technology around that could do this story justice.

Since the studio announced that Watchmen was going to be made, the Internet has been flooded with fan boy discussion about who would direct it, and who would play The Watchmen, and would the film be faithful to the novel? Well according to our loyal follower, Bentley Mustafa, yes, yes, and YES!

Now before we dive into this, I want to warn you that there will be huge spoilers, so if you do not want to know what’s in the film, stop reading now…. otherwise, sit your ass down and get ready for some Watchmen 411!

Here’s what Bentley Mustafa has to say about the screening.

There were approximately 200 people at the screening.

1.  No Black Freighter, although we do catch glimpses of the newsstand and the kid who reads the comic, but only briefly.

2. The ending is different, no squid.  I was one of the people who never really cared about squid/no squid, but I feel the ending will work better for mainstream audiences that have never read the book.

3. They do not imply a sequel anymore than the book does...

4.  The montage covering the heroes of the past is done exceptionally well, and was longer than I expected.  Allows the audience to understand that this is an alternate version of the past and everything they know should be thrown out the window.

5. It is dark, but not the stark realism that fills the Dark Knight.  The Watchmen reality is a little more surreal in its feel, like a dream.  It really has the feel of the comic in it.

6. Look for the cameo by Snyder's son. He also played young Leonidas in 300.

7. It was fantastically close to the book; even the framings of shots were lifted directly from the book.

8. Jackie Earl Halley is the shit in this.  He IS Rorschach.

9. This movie is gory.  I'm a gore hound and I was surprised at how graphic some scenes were.  Really had people squirming.

10. NAKED Sally Jupiter. (CORRECTION NAKED Silk Spectre)

11. Only character I didn't like was Veidt/Ozymandias.  I thought the actor was weak.

I have to say Snyder knocked this one out of the park.  There is some gruesome, brutal stuff here that is hard to watch.  The fight scenes are awesome, and, like in 300, Snyder continues the use of ramping the frame rate to accentuate the movements of the characters. I knew there was going to be some slo-mo, but I didn't think he overdid it. All in all, fans of the book are going to more than pleased with the film.  For a book that was for years considered un-filmable, he certainly managed to hit almost every beat and did not compromise any of the material (except for the squid).

So there you have it folks, breaking news once again brought to you by yours truly. I cannot wait for the films release; it will definitely up the ante for comic book adaptations in the future.

Commented By: reddog on 2009-02-12 06:10:08
If he does hit this out of the park, there is no question in my mind that he should be directing the next superman movie. right now, the Wachowski's are rumoured. No offense...but I'd rather not see any sutbtle S&M shots in my comic movies.

People who complain about the squid are ignorant and have no idea what they are talking about. Do some damn research and try to understand the book first.
Squid??

At what point in the graphic novel is it said to be a f__kin squid?!?!?!?! Get over it for christ sake. Why cut your nose to spite your face, this looks awesome!

The one thing that must be known : Does Zach stay faithful to the comic's social politics ? Or does he pussy out of it like the chickenhawk faggot of ' 300 ' fame that he is?

Looking good

Seems like if you replace the squid with a scary sci-fi bomb you've still got the story without having to do all the background island stuff that has no narrative purpose other that explaining where the hell a giant telepathic squid came from. It's exactly what I'd do if I were trying to get the story to movie length. Thumbs up!
What?

"No offense...but I'd rather not see any sutbtle S&M shots in my comic movies." Ummm...yeah, because seeing people dress up in skin-tight leather outfits and engage in situations rife with both sex and violence is in no way "subtle" S&M.

Squid?
Commented By: Matt on 2009-02-12 15:35:04
the squid isn't as important as the deconstruction of the superhero/vigilante which seems to be the ACTUAL point of the graphic novel/film. Christ, can't people actually wait and see the film before they determine its worth.
violence
Commented By: tyler durden on 2009-02-12 17:08:26
what do they do that would make a "gore hound" supprised? did they change it because the only violence i remember was 1.the comidians death,2.veidts staged assassination, 3.moloch shot,4.rorshacks interogation,5. blake shoots the asain woman, 6.manhattan blowing up rorshack, 7. the mass death in new york, 8.the prison sequences and as these are violent scenes i do not see how they could make a "gore hound" suprised at how graphic it is. do they make the scenes more violent?
Maybe...
Commented By: Roark on 2009-02-13 00:00:19
It doesn't have to be a squid, just an alien like entity or even. Although I don't know WHY you'd remove it. It works well with the story, even if it is a little tacky compared to most movie problems.

The creature is very clearly identified as a squid in the comic book miniseries (not graphic novel--contrary to common misconception, it was a miniseries). That's made quite clear when they first capture it for experimentation purposes. That said, the fact that it's a squid is secondary to the terrorist plot itself, so I'm not sure why people get so bent out of shape about the lack of a squid.
Squid
Commented By: Mike Rutschky on 2009-02-13 10:45:54
The squid is important because A) every subplot in the book leads up to it appearing at the end, and B) it renders Veidt's quest useless. He's attempting to untangle the greatest Gordian Knot ever, the puzzle of humankind existing in peace when in reality it's on the verge of killing itself. Regular solutions have stopped working so the only thing that's going to get through to people as something that's truly insane. It makes a lot of sense, and I've explained to people before and the concept of faking an alien invasion in order to force human beings into working with each other really blew their mind. I mean, if WB thought the squid looked stupid they could have made it look like a giant facehugger or something, but to shitcan the whole idea altogether is more than a little disappointing. Having said that, I'll be first in line to see this film.
Think for a second, please

Ok, I'm so dissappointed with the fanboys. I thought they were understanding Watchmen and they had read like me. And they adored the material. Well, It's easy: Watchmen it just works because it's a comic book and that's why it's a masterpiece. But, if you want to make a movie and you take the squid, and you make the Nite Owl a handsome guy and you say "superhero deconstruction" and "close to the comic book" in EVERY interview/review of this Hype Machine you're a lier. Because close to the book is respect the Squid/Alien invasion and the killing of thousand of people. If mainstream can't catch two high concepts (Dr. Manhattan and the squid) it isn't my problem. Because this it's not going to work as a movie. Because is perfect in a comic book and what is next? James Joyce' Ulysses: THE MOVIE or.... GUERNICA: THE MOVIE? C'mon guys!!!
Awesome

I can't wait. I'm so glad they got real actors to star in this film and not just movie stars. Haley is a favorite. It's refreshing to see actors who can back up their superstar status with actual talent. The best acting schools teach more than just character study. Check out the Film Connection Acting Mentorship Program. It’s a weekend Intensive Workshop w/ Joe Anthony ! http://www.joeanthonystudios.com 3 days in small class (12 people or less) in a major city in the US. Only $750.00, which includes all books and materials. Go to http://www.film-connection.com/acting.html to apply!

This movie will be incredible. Can't wait. The absence of the squid is unfortunate... but the squid really isn't the point. The outcome of Veidt's plan is still the same... and that's what matters. I think Zack Snyder nailed this. Hats off.

When I read Watchmen, the one thing that infuriated me was the squid. I remember saying that it was such a great, literary story, then...gigantic squid. Seriously? The key to saving mankind is a giant alien squid? This from the smartest man in the world? When I heard they were making a movie out of it, my first response was, "please tell me that they're getting rid of the squid." So I dance in joy to hear that there will be no squid. The book was great, the squid was dumb. Flame all you want, but Hollywood agrees with me.
Hey KR-

If thats really what you thought when reading the book...so do you like the book? I mean, how can you demean the ending like that, yet claim to understand the book at all? Its pathetic. Thats like saying "a glowing blue man saves the world? thats the ending?" You see when you are all smug and arrogant like that, you can make anything sound silly. "Seriously? KR didn't appreciate the brilliant ending? And this guy thinks he gets Watchmen?" See how that works?
Fuck this guy

If Manhattan caused all the trouble, wouldn't this just piss Russia off into nuking the US? The US no longer has god on their side, so to speak. And nuclear explosions don't put the universe into perspective for every citizen of the world. When aliens attack Earth, suddenly you feel small, and realize Earth-based conflicts are trivial. Nuclear explosions are man-made.

It was actually thought (and documented) that one of the only things that could have stopped the Cold War was an extraterrestrial invasion/encounter. I think Moore knew that, and tried even further to mirror that sense of reality.

Ok im seriously tired of hearing people say they didnt get it, or it wasnt good for some ridiculous reason such as: it didnt match up to the comic...I never read the comic or any comic for that matter. but i do consider myself a bit of a movie crittic. The movie wasnt confusing if you couldnt follow that it wasnt meant to be a cookie cutter marvel comic movie or the fact that they purposly broke the norm for comic book storyline then youre and idiot and as for the the movie not matching up. the people who say these things like, the book or the comic was better, are just pissed off becuz we just recieved all the entertainment of tht comic book in a fraction of the time...imo it was a great movie and the makers did a good job of relaying the message. P.S. I couldve done without the glowing smirf penis

1. The ending was changed, IT WAS FOR THE BETTER, SHUT UP ALREADY!!! 2. Yes, Silk Spectre's chest is revealed. As in, you can see her boobs. I think that is stupid. I really do. I mean, sure, Dan and Silk Spectre's sex scene was needed, BUT NOT THAT MUCH! They put so much detail into that scene it makes me sick! 3. Hasey WAS AMAZING!!! I Can't Believe this guy did such a great job.
