All has been quiet on the HALO movie front lately. Last we heard, the Halo movie came together with Bungie, Peter Jackson, producer Scott Stuber, Fox, and Universal. The script went through at least three writers. I did the first script review of Alex Garland’s draft then D.B. Weiss came aboard, and most recently Josh Olson. Neil Blomkampf was hired to direct and did direct several great Halo short films. But then the plug was pulled last summer and the movie has been in a holding pattern ever since.
Till now…
In an effort to get the ball rolling again, I just learned that big time G.I. JOE screenwriter STUART BEATTIE has written a spec screenplay called HALO: FALL OF REACH, and it's based on the best selling novel of the same name by Eric Nylund.
I hear Beattie is a huge Halo fan, and like most Halo fans, has been frustrated at the progress for HALO to reach the silver screen…
…so Stuart took action and did something about it on his own in between writing assignments.
A spec screenplay is when you write a script on your own without being paid a dime for it in the hopes that it could sell hence “spec” or “speculative.”
Stuart is in that top tier of professional screenwriters that get “commissioned” by studios to write scripts. The top screenwriters don’t spec nor need to spec anymore. They get the big money paying gigs. Stuart was commissioned to write SPY HUNTER, SPLINTER CELL, and GEARS OF WAR for various studios. His G.I. JOE script is the one that got Paramount to greenlight the $170 million dollar movie which is shooting now.
HALO: FALL OF REACH is a labor of love by Beattie in the hopes of finally getting the movie made.
So what is the script about? Below is what my source tells me…
The script is, first and foremost, a character-driven story about a soldier named John who was kidnapped or "conscripted" by the UNSC when he was just six years old, and then brutally trained to become an elite Spartan warrior known as Master Chief 117.
The script then takes us through the horrific first contact with the Covenant hordes on the doomed colony world of Harvest, and then climaxes with the spectacular fall of the UNSC forward base on Reach, during which every other Spartan is slaughtered.
The script also gives detailed outlines for the second movie, HALO: RISE OF THE FLOOD, which takes place entirely on the Halo ringworld, and the third and final movie, HALO: BATTLE FOR EARTH, which roughly follows the events of Halo 3, the game.
One cool advantage of this first script is that (like the shark in JAWS) you don't even see the Covenant until halfway through the movie. And because all the creatures are CGI creations, this cuts the budget down dramatically and makes a first Halo movie that much more viable. For Halo fans, it's like the prequel that provides all the answers to questions they've thought about for years. For non Halo fans, it's an exciting action movie that provides a clear, concise introduction to a world five hundred years in the future with relatable characters and a terrifying alien menace.
So there you have it folks! If there is anyone at Microsoft or Bungie reading this, call CAA, get the damn script and at least take a read! You guys certainly have nothing to lose by taking a look because the guy’s track record speaks for itself.
If you’re a HALO fan, harass Microsoft to take action because from what I gathered here in Hollywood, unfortunately the guys that are seriously cock blocking the HALO movie from getting made are those control freaks at Microsoft.
Again what does Microsoft have to lose by taking a look at a script written by a big time Hollywood screenwriter who decided to take a crack at HALO on his own?
Nada!
I will be following this story closely as more develops along with trying to obtain the script myself like I did with Alex Garland’s draft back in the day so stay tuned.

Umm this is great and all but if i remember correctly Several spartans survivedthe fall of reach such as: John, Kelly, Fred, Linda, Joshua, and several more... come on people stay with the storyline. If ur guna make a movie do it rite. im tired of good books/games with crappy movies.

man what I just read is awsome. when I was reading the books I was hoping that the script of the movie would follow the same lines of the books and especially fall of reach because I wanted a movie about master chiefs youth. so Im hoping that it would work, and please dont screw it up, because Im a big fan of doom and I was really mad after seeing the movie cause it suck.

If they have 3 screen writers thoroughly plotting the movie then there's no doubt the movie willl succeed sucessfully, infact there are over 1.2 million fans of halo. Just imagine how much money they'll gain from that! For fucking sakes everybody is going insane to hear so many damn delays for the movie! Now people today are beginning to think the movie will not come out. If they keep this up halo is gonna lose its fan out there.

Just wanted to know what the progress of the actual movie making was. I think it's awesome the finally got a script adaptation from the book. I just hope that the studios aren't just sitting on they're hands and not doing anything about it. If they do this movie right and soon they could definitely have a movie that rivals The Dark Knight.

Duhan is right...if they are going to follow the FACTS.why would they say all the spartans die?cause that is just not correct.master chief actually goes BACK for them after them events of Halo.some of those spartans which survive play a HUGE role in the the rest of the halo universe afterwards...i have high hopes for this movie...BUT ALL THE FATCS FROM BOOKS SHOULD BE FOLLOWED!

i have to agree. Microsoft really needs to check out this script that was written for FREE. Come on Microsoft the damnnn thing is free. Take a look and get Halo made. Halo has needed a Movie made of it since it first came out all those years ago. I will lose faith in the movie industry if this film is not made. Who cares if its over budget. Most Films are. The suits just need to take a chance and do it. They will make huge money if they quit sitting on their ass and get to work.

I read the fall of reach a few years ago and when I got done the first thing I thought was that there should be a movie based on the book then when I heard there was a movie being worked on and not based on the fall of reach I found this to be very obtuse, now I just feel like someone took my idea of course I only ever told a few people and many halo fans have read the book. Finally I would like to say that is awesome that there was a change that is defintely for the better.

I beleive this is a good move, the sooner the better. ive seen all of the short films and felt critical, but i saw the potential right from the get go. Notice the fine and STRONG display the covenant made, no cheesy looks, the UNSC marines also did great. What im saying is that if the short films were a stepping stone then yes they need work but its doable its proven. thats my peice GOGO HALO! :)>`

The film will be made in CGI (Computer Generated Graphics), otherwise, 3D Animation.
But, as I heard, they need all the help they can get, I asked, and I am now doing some concept work for them. (None will be released)

Well finally. It's good to hear that the Halo movie maybe will get the green light again. Sure as heck took them long enough. No offense, but it just takes them too darn long, I like a good movie like everybody else, but this almost takes all the fun out of it.
Of course I know there are also people that are willing to continue the project, but it's just frustrating that they make you all exciting and then let you know you've been waiting more then a year for nothing just because of some nob head.
Anyway, good news there's still hope for the movie, and of course thanks for posting this.

I am Jean-Luc, The movie will be released late 2009, early 2010. We are not working from the script on this site. Our script is being made based on the novels, written by Eric Nylund. I can answer questions via email, so feel free to email me.
And we can use all the help we can get, we currently need modelers and concept artists (who can draw human bodies, for characters, such as "Dr. Catherine Halsey", and John, as a kid.
(P.s. everyone calls me John, so go ahead and call me that, its my nickname.)
And we are not asossiated with Hollywood, nor Microsoft or Bungie. We are a non-profit "3D Animation and Modeling" team. After this film, if successful, we hope to start up as a small incorperation, and build video games, and software. Everyone's invited to help out, and ven join the team!

Again: We, Helipad Studios, have no association with Microsoft, Bungie LLC, or anyone else, except the people around us, which is the team, and associated individuals that are helping.
This movie will be released Middle 2010, maybe Late 2010, it is way to early for a release date, we have begun merely 6 months ago, and expect a trailer soon, it is a pre-render, but will be a "Look-What-We-Are-Doing" to everyone.

(not really but it be alot worse) the part in Firs Strike when lind sniped all the bansheees it was SWEET i was jumping up and down lol but i thought how cool that could be in a move. I like where this script is going, but i really think this movie needs to get the fans involved and make sure that the direction the movie takes is in the interest of all the Diehards who understand exactly what i Master Chief is all about.
First of all, every film, regardless of script, depends on the actors involved and the directors own take on the idea. From what i've seen so far, there's been a mass recruitment of old men that really can't act for shit. From a story line thats far too familair to the titantic flashback, and im refurring to some of the official attempts of "movie clips" or previews. Now, as much as i appretiate the efforts of these people, theres a large part of me that wants to kick them where it hurts and send them running, because those films were diabolical...
What i did like however! and i hope some of you agree, is the short film that was available on xbox live, where they CGI'd the covenant and gave you the perspective of what the combat is like. The graphics were pretty sweet considering the small budget the film was probably made on and it actually gave me an decent image of what the film might be like. I looked good.
Despite this, i think the film needs to focus on Master Chief, and not on the UNSC. As much as i loved the voice overs in game of the angry austrilian guy screaming his face off as he failed to do anything useful, i just don't want to see a film about him...
I recommend the Halo books to anyone who likes books, the story line not only takes a mature take on the Halo title but the writing suites perfectly to how you'd imagine halo to be written. I definetly don't want no first person crap like they did in Doom, where 'The Rock' played the shitty bad guy and that film, although with a few thrills, was shite and only memorable as a laugh. It's sad that i take this so seriously, but hey, Master Chief has got to be one of the best designed characters of all time. He barely says a word, but he comes across so fucking hardcore that he doesn't have to. What the first book does, which this mentioned script is to be based on, turns the chief into "John 117". For the first time you can relate to him and you can see why he says so little and exactly what he fights for. The movie needs to be slow and fast paced, with drama so epic that even Frodo and his chums are forced to go "damn...thats the shit!", followed with a few wholesome tears and desperate need to shoot a jackel and hug a smack grunt.
If this film becomes anything falls anything short of perfect, it'll be a waste of time. It needs a huge budget. The fan base is already there, meaning from a financial point of view, all you need is some kick ass trailors and decent review from the metro and its a blockbuster hit.
A final plee to bungie, Microsoft, those writing the script and all those sat in hollywood....
It's about Master Chief. Treat it as an epic, not a game and make sure you get some fucking good actors!

I read all of the books and i think that by using the fall of reach plot you can get other ppl who don't know the halo series into the movie. But i don't want to see the second movie (if they get that far) to be about the halo ring. I liked first strike's plot way better. w/e i'd be happy if they actually get this into production.

Truthfully i think that with out atleast some summary of Fall of Reach, either by giving it its' own movie or just a walk through before the actual full halo movie, otherwise the game story by itself probably wouldn't hold up on the big screen. But which ever storyline they choose they better stick to, cuz the last thing i want to see is hollywood bullshiting aroung with the best game i've ever played.

Ive been thinking about the movie lately, and if they were gunna show masterchiefs face or not. I;ll admit, i really wanted to c what he looked like. But ive come to sort of a realization. They cant show master chiefs face. Masterchief represents all of the soldiers that did extraordinary things in battle to save their comrades. Most of these soldiers died soon after, and are still unknown to many people. Masterchief John 117 is all of those people. Okay, so hes not exactly all of those people because hes not died, and hes quite famous within in the military an this game. But they cannot showhis face, because how can you show the face of every man whos gone the extra yard to succeed? you just cant.

First, the first eight minutes of the movie are fake. Second, basing the movies on the universe will totally awesome. Third, they should include First Strike because I want to see more ass-whoopin between Halos 1 and 2. And fourth, that movie is going to be a box-office smash!!!!!!!!!!!

On the subject of what's under that famous helmet i agree with Duhan that they shouldn't show his face, everyone has thier own view on master chief, and thanks to his face being masked these views are more individual, i think it is like when a movie is made from a book, the movie can be completely different to what your imagination thought it would be from the book, also i love the fact that master chief is one of the most popular video game characters of all time and no ones knows what he looks like, id love that to stay like that for as long as possible, although it would be freaking awesome to see him at the very end of the halo movies, boo yaa!!!

i agree with the person 2 under me. i think they should do all the books including Cole Protical and Contact Harvest. it wuld be more intersting. it would also be like harry potter were they leave thing out that the reader think is important, for ex. peves is one of the main chaerters in harry potter and he is not in any movie.

I'm not quite sure it's going to be easy for making a movie without showing master chief's face. In the book ''the fall of reach'' you read his thoughts. you can never hide someone who is really important for like 3 hours! I think it looks stuphid if someone has to be surrounded by others so you can't see his face.
I love halo's storyline so much that i will do everything for it to let the movie go on with producing!

YES! The idea to base it on the book fall of reach, is an amazing plan! That book was incredible, and it will also give people alotmore understanding of the halo storyline, as most people who play the game dont have a clue were master chief came from! Then after they have the fall of reach film, they could do sequels of the other books.

even if they make a friggin animated mocie like the starry night trailer of halo 3, the movie would make soo much money, if i were some big time producer,i'd view that as a picture perfect oppertunity.hell,if i had the equipment and that spec screenplay and some actors,i'd shoot the dam movie in my back yard.

Okay in Fall of Reach the book, Master Chief's face wasn't covered the whole time. In fact it wasn't until he got the MJOLNIR armor that his face was covered, and that was far far into the book. And even once he got the armor, it was a year or two before the events of Halo: Combat Evolved. So, he would age a ,lot in those two years. He would look different. And look at Star Wars. In episodes 1-3 you can see Darth Vader's Face. Than 4-6 you cant, and its not till the very end of Star Wars 6 you finally see his face. So.....maybe its time we see John's face. And the movie would be a good way to do that.

well i am really pissed off by guyz arround the web who keep on sayin anything about halo movie, i am continously into halo, its like a parallel world to me.i got all the books & comics about halo, i read them all in chronological order when i finish the last then i restart so u c i am a big fan, i wont trust ur site or ur news i will just wait for the movie whenever it comes out, when it comes out automatically everybody will shut up
