Exclusive Interview: A Brief 1:1 With Guillermo del Toro
By Kellvin Chavez on November 14, 2008
This week I had a chance to chat for a few minutes with one of Latinoreview's favorite directors, Guillermo del Toro, while at the Hellboy 2 DVD presentation. Besides being one of the nicest men in the business, he's also very candid and open about his projects when you talk to him.

Since there hasn't been much news or progress on The Hobbit, and since he already had interviews on the project with other websites, I didn't want the few minutes I had with him to focus on that movie, (although I did get in a couple of questions). I really wanted to find out what his future projects will be. The interview is brief, (we were having a few drinks) but it's a great read into what Guillermo wants to do once The Hobbit is finished.

Do you know Twitter? Have you heard of it?

Toro: Yeah, I know it, but I don't use it.

This is a question from one of my followers. Have you ever thought about doing science fiction stories since fantasy characters suit you so well? Creating aliens?

Toro: We played for a while with the idea of doing 'Halo', Peter Jackson and I. I was involved in that for about three or four months or so. I really love the 'Halo' universe. I love Master Chief and I love the creatures that were created by Bungie. I was hoping to do that. I have very few loves in science fiction. I'm not a science fiction guy as much as I'm a horror guy, but by the same token I'm not that much of a fantasy guy. I love Ray Bradbury. I love Theodore Sturgeon. I love Sheckly. I love Harlan Ellison. So it's really more the concepts that I find than it is hardware or creatures that I find. But for example, one of my favorite ideas is 'Enders Game'. That's a really great idea for a film or films, but it's not on the plate. At this stage whatever's on the plate is my next twelve years [laughs]. So I don't really have anything. Some people consider the 'Mountains of Madness' horror/sci-fi. I personally don't because I think that although it fits the prerequisites of a sci-fi/horror, I think it's atmospherically much more horror.

And here's another one. How high is H.P. Lovecraft on your list?

Toro: It's at the highest on my list of priorities. The fact is when I struck the Universal deal which is going to keep me busy until 2017, part of the deal is that we do research and development on the digital technology to be able to render the Lovecraft creatures properly, digitally and physically. So we are actively now doing it. You've seen the mechanics and that's just the tip of the iceberg. We're really thinking about creating something that has never been seen on the screen. So we have to create the tools. If I can I would love to do that as soon as I can after 'The Hobbit', but I never know. It might end up that after 'The Hobbit' I do a small movie. John Lennon used to say life is what happens when you're making other plans and it's true.

What's the progress on 'The Hobbit'?

Toro: Well, the progress, unfortunately, is that there's nothing more to report than that we're writing. We're writing everyday. We're writing really very obsessively and there will be news to report by Christmas or New Years. That's all I can say.

What about The Dragon? The voice of the dragon?

Toro: I know who I want and I know what I want the dragon to look like, very specifically, but it would be dancing around architecture. I cannot describe it. It's much better to show it when we have it.

If you cannot do 'Hellboy 3' would you consider one of your two amigos doing it?

Toro: I don't know if any of them have an affinity for the material. I know that Alfonso [Cuaron] loves it, but he loves it as a fan. He doesn't love it, I think, enough to do it. I would beg Universal to wait. I mean, I would not even mind shooting as soon as the second movie of 'The Hobbit' comes out. I would do anything to shoot 'Hellboy 3'.
