I know my posts are short today, but I'm trying to leave to go to San Jose for my cousin's wedding and my boss keeps sending me news stories, trapping me in a world of Latino slavery. At least I'm not being force fed Menudo. That stuff is gross and gives me the shits.
Just Jared has the first pictures of Robert Downey Jr. dressed up as Sherlock Holmes. But he actually looks like a cross between Willy Wonka and Charlie Chaplin. Downey is a bit out there, so maybe these are his street clothes and we haven't seen him in costume yet.
Click the pic below to check out the other nine pictures.

If you've read Sherlock Holmes you know that he is a master of disguise. At one point he dresses as a vagrant in order to spy of Irene Adler. Because of the other vagrants in the photos, I deduce that thats probably what we're seeing here.

Well, He doesn't look very disguised to me. He could use of a better hat at least...

Whatever he's wearing for this shot, it's Downey himself that will sell the persona. With the amazing roles he's pulled off over the years (especially the last few) I say just give him the chance to wow us again. Who knows, he may even pull off a decent British accent.

Mr. Dandy, RDJ pulled off a brilliant accent in "Chaplin", so I have no doubt in my mind that he'll be terrific here. I can't wait to see this-it'll be brilliant.

I'm glad someone brought up the disguise issue. He always dressed up in costume to get info.
In the stories Holmes, while messy in his living habits, with extremely neat in his dress. Always a dressed nicely, hair done, etc. And Holmes was probably very wealthy. Still, I was nervous for a moment.
...
God, I hope he is in disguise.

No matter I much I liked him in Iron Man, he's just not a Sherlock Holmes. He lacks the finesse and sophistication. A Dr. Watson, perhaps.

yeah

This is a little too festive. I also hope it's just a disguise.

The Real Sherlock Homes
Commented By: J on 2008-10-11 19:41:42
The comic books kind of created a entirely different character that the the Holmes in Sir Arthur Connan Doyal's books. The real Holmes is eccentric, erratic, and slovenly (relative to the times he was portrayed). He was also manically depressive, often time locking himself in his study for months, or being or going through periods of wild excitement. So to portray him in a strange outfit like show above is more accurate and actually better, seeing as they will probably get into his cocaine addiction that everyone seems to have forgotten about...honestly a fourteen year knows this stuff an no one else does?? Oh and the bowler hat is the mjost realistic part about the clothing. In the book, Sir Doyle never said anything about Homes wearing a signature Homes hat. He most likely wore the bowler hats very popular to the times, just like his friend Watson.

Where's the pipe? Who is the wuss that is afraid to stand up to the Politically Correct Police and keep true to SACD's books?
Basil Rathbone is the TRUE Holmes. Brett was horrible.

DAniel Day Lewis, he look like Sherlock Holmes, Downey is short guy, good actor but not in the right place here, he take the role just cause in Hollywood he take moneys to the producers after ironman, every time end in this way, look Orlando bloom, after LOTR, "hey guys, in this movie we need an actor with a sword in one hand and money for us in the other one"! Bloom!!! and this year, every producers want Downey Jr, a better actor of course, but not good for the role, and what about the age? Holmes and Watson are two guys in the their '50/60 yeras old. LAw and Jr are too young for this roles.

I don't think he can fail at any character he portrays. He will nail the accent no problem and he won't stop 'til he gets it right where he thinks we want it. RDJ is the man. As for what he wears read the books and who smokes a pipe outside in sherlock holmes? what is supposed to do carry it behind his ear. Look how many guys have been the BAT. I have never been disappointed in anything Jr. does except what we all know that is irrelevent. So see you at the Downey Jr. version of Sherlock Holmes .......PEACE

Hope its a disguise, he shouldn't be wearing a bowler he's a gent, Watson is a working man and should wear a bowler, but i think Holmes should wear a top hat when he's in London, and only the dear stalker if he's in the countryside

In reply to "The Real Sherlock Holmes"
I just have to say, I'm 14 too, and am also a Sherlock freak (I read every novel/ short story in fifth grade :P)
I just have to say, at first when I heard about RDjr, I didn't like it at ALL, not because of the acting, but because of the way he looked, I just couldn't get over the nose!!!
Now that I've looked at more pictures and listened to him talk about it, I can see it much better than I could... I'm exited :D
The only problem I have is they're referring to Irene Adler as the love interest... What the hey?
She outsmarted Holmes... so that instantly means there in love... I don't get it... but I guess they had to add romance SOMEHOW :P
Another interesting bit of info, Sherlock never said "Elementary my dear Watson" I hope they don't overuse that line in the movie :P

Sequel
Commented By: hallo world on 2009-01-07 10:38:40
I just read that the sequel, "Brokeback Baker Street," has already started production. According to the script that has leaked onto the Internet, Holmes and Watson start a passionate liaison, meeting regularly at 221B. Mrs. Hudson opens the door and finds them in bed together. Holmes grabs a candlestick and strikes her dead. Holmes and Watson attempt to cover up the crime, but Holmes's brother Mycroft suspects the truth. Finally, Mycroft confronts Holmes, who challenges him to a cage fight. In the climactic final sequence, with Watson clinging to the bars of the cage, Holmes lifts Mycroft over his head and body-slams him to the floor, killing him instantly.
Doesn't that sound GREAT?

If you are a ture fan of the canon, Daniel Day Lewis is more the Sherlock type. He is a gentleman form a fairly well to do family. The deer stalker hat and pipe came form the drawings illustrating the canon in the Strand magazine.
