G.I. Joe: Rise Of The Cobra's buzz hasn't been the greatest thing in the online universe. Our own El Guapo chased down a rumor the permeated the online film blogs last month that director Stephen Sommers was taken off the project, and the edit was being "fixed" because the film tested so horribly. That rumor was quashed as quickly as possible, since something that big needs multiple layers of verification; all sources claimed the rumor was just that: hearsay.
Now, as the film approaches its August 7th release, a new buzz has started to accumulate: the film ain't as bad as we thought.
Call me a cynic, but since the chances of me seeing this movie regardless of how good it is are pretty good, I'm still waiting to see for myself.
However, the G.I. Joe: Rise Of The Cobra crew announced today in an Australian press junket that the movie will get a sequel and the cast and director are locked in for next summer.
CineFools reports: Our host Jabba, yes only in Australia could a host of a Press Conference of a major Hollywood movie be called Jabba, asked if the cast were locked in for a sequel. Director Sommers had hinted at it throughout the Conference and here is his answer.
"Yes they are!" the whole cast smile and nod their heads and make a lot of noise but amidst it all Sommers shouted "Next Summer!"
So there you have it: the cliffhanger-y parts at the end of Rise Of The Cobra are actually going to go somewhere.
Also at the press conference, someone asked Sommers about the rumor of his firing that alit the nets in June:
Sommers replied "Yes I have final cut, it was actually a surprise because I was in the editing room and I got a phone call from a friend checking if I had been fired and replaced, so I just kept editing. That's what's crazy about the internet because I have final cut and they couldn't throw me off if they wanted and clearly when you see the movie you'll realise how silly that was.Someone said 'It was the worst testing movie in Paramount's history' that's crap! When you see the movie you'll know it's false. It is discouraging though. If you took two seconds to look into it not only do I have final cut but as a director if I didn't have final cut, you'd have to really screw up a movie to get fired because once a director gets fired from a project the stigma attached to that movie... you're just dead."
Buzz-Kills are always interesting, especially when a film tries to dig itself out of a hole that previously had me putting my expectations for G.I. Joe in line with any Eddie Murphy movie of the past 5 years.
Does knowing that these characters and plots have a future persuade you to give this one a shot or has the PR damage been done?
