Gulliver's Travels Details And A Sarah Marshall Spinoff

By George 'El Guapo' Roush on December 03, 2008
Today at the press conference for the Jim Carrey comedy Yes Man, writer Nicolas Stoller gave up some details on the upcoming Gulliver's Travels movie starring Jack Black after fellow journos Fred Topel and Devin stared at him without blinking and asked him about it:

Nicolas: It's gonna be awesome. Basically it's with Jack Black who plays a modern day Gulliver who gets transported back to Lilliputan...I'm not sure what I'm allowed to say but the director is this guy named Rob Letterman who just did this movie called Monsters vs. Aliens, which is an awesome Dreamworks animated movie, and I'm just seeing the initial sketches and drawings. It's gonna be pretty exciting. It's a big fantasy comedy movie.

Can you give any hints on where you can get modern with such a classic work of literature?

Nicolas: Well, he starts in present day New York. And the he kind of falls into Lilliput which is more fantasy then..I think the originals, the original novel took place in kind of 18th century England, and so this is more of a fantasy universe he falls into.

Will this Gulliver be visiting all of the lands in the book?

Nicolas:
Uh, he might be visiting some of the lands.

Hmm..I wonder if he's also going to visit the island of Brobdingnag, which houses a bunch of giants. I'm sure they'll throw that in there as well and would suit Jack Black's take on Gulliver quite well.

Nicolas was also asked about Get Him To The Greek. This is a story about Aldous Snow, the crazy musician guy played by Russell Brand in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, who has to attend a concert in L.A. But the rocker is so out of control it leads to more than what everyone involved bargained for.

Nicolas:
It's character based. It's a road movie, so they go to London, New York, Vegas and then are in L.A. And I'm trying to be very specific about where they are in each of those places. It's kind of, you're following Jonah's character into this rock star universe.

And Russell plays the same character?

Nicolas: He does.

And Jonah's not?

Nicolas:
Jonah's not the same character.

And guys, so sorry if the website's been wonky lately. We're fixing everything as I speak!
