Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the 2005 film that starred Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt as undercover spy-spouses hired to kill each other, is about to get a reboot thanks to Fox studio Regency Enterprises. Sort of. OK, not really.
According to the folks over at New York Magazine's Vulture, Regency is working on Mr. and Mrs. Jones, a film that they describe as a "quasi-prequel" to the Smith film and which "will serve as an origin story about a similar but differently named couple, showing how a pair of twentysomething spies are set up as a fake married couple when they graduate agency training."
The only thing is that, while Vulture calls it a reboot, it clearly isn't. Considering that the characters are not the same, the stories are different, and the only similarity is the premise "Spies being married, yay!" -- something seen even in the Spy Kids movies -- this strikes me more as the studio building a franchise... of sorts.
No talent is attached as of yet, but we can safely assume they'll be ridiculously attractive in order to live up to the hormonal powerhouse that is Jolie and Pitt running around with guns for two hours.
