J.J. Abrams Says There Is No Shatner In New Star Trek Movie

AMC TV interviewed J.J. Abrams about his upcoming TV show fringe and also about Star Trek. He tells AMC why Shatner isn't in the movie, pretty much destroying any ticket sales from hard core Shatner fans who were on the fence about seeing another Trek film:
Q: How do you react to William Shatner's ire at not having a role in the movie?
A: It was very tricky. We actually had written a scene with him in it that was a flashback kind of thing, but the truth is, it didn't quite feel right. The bigger thing was that he was very vocal that he didn't want to do a cameo. We tried desperately to put him in the movie, but he was making it very clear that he wanted the movie to focus on him significantly, which, frankly, he deserves. The truth is, the story that we were telling required a certain adherence to the Trek canon and consistency of storytelling. It's funny -- a lot of the people who were proclaiming that he must be in this movie were the same people saying it must adhere to canon. Well, his character died on screen. Maybe a smarter group of filmmakers could have figured out how to resolve that.

What a lame copout by Abrams...lol. It's friggin' sci fi. If they wanted to,a story resurrecting Kirk would take two seconds of brainstorming.
Let's just hope this movie has more testerone than most of the Kirkless Treks. For some reason Starfleet builds ball-less robotlike generic Captains who don't step up until the shit hits the fan or the ratings are in the gutter. How about some ass kickers for a change. Think about how many seasons in it takes on any of the Trek shows for the captains to grow a pair.
Another thing. Stop taking beautiful actresses and giving them the worst hair in the universe.....
By my estimation Abrams has about 20 minutes of movie for his Captain to grow a set or he will be making the same mistake the franchise has been making for 2 decades.

Shatner is too greedy. He was great as Captain Kirk, no doubt, but you know, if he really respected the Star Trek franchise, he would have been very happy with a cameo and just follow along. It's always been like that, any half-knowing Star Trek fan, has to admit, Shatner's ego is too big at times.

I find this very odd. I read Shatner's autobiography. In it, he said he had been pushing for a new Star Trek series that would show the Star Trek characters played by (I think he used the term) "young studs".

All this talk about Trek captains growing some, and the truth is that they have them. They're just not that violent prone, while the viewing public is addicted. Fact is that if one of the captains DID act like people seem to be demanding, THAT would violate the Trek creedo Roddenberry established, about the mainstream of the Federation being non-racist, non-violent, somewhat more enlightened people.

If JJ cared enough its easy. To get Shatner a part you just make it so that the Generations crap was either a dream or it just "looked" like he died. Not him having the focal point that is quite wrong. More like he should be in his own final Star Trek film I guess. In any case in Generations could have been a good film but they had to kill off his characters. Plus if you think about flashbacks....they just flashback to before he died......not that hard JJ your writers are obviously not very creative....so much inbreeding is the reason for this.....LOL
