John Goodman Slapped With Lawsuit

By Garth Franklin on April 5, 2007

Constantin Film has filed a $3 million lawsuit against actor John Goodman, accusing him of reneging on an agreement to appear in Volker Schlondorff's upcoming medieval drama "Pope Joan."

An adaptation of Donna Woolfolk Cross' 1997 novel and based on a medieval legend, the story chronicles the life of a woman who, disguised as a man, ascends the papal throne.  Franka Potente also stars.

Goodman had reportedly given a verbal agreement (ie. unlikely to stand up in court) to play Pope Serguis for a cool $500,000 and shooting was scheduled to start in May.

Goodman's reps notified Constantin in March that the actor would not be appearing in the film due to commitments to the upcoming Wachowski Brothers "Speed Racer" movie.
