Ever since "Captain America: The First Avenger" went into pre-production, expectations have been high. Many have questioned as to whether or not "The Wolfman" director Joe Johnston is up to the challenge of taking on such an iconic character in the Marvel universe. Die hard fans are already throwing this production into the trash, thinking that casting choices like granting Chris Evans the lead role is one of many bad moves.
Maybe this will calm some fanboys' nerves for a few moments with Johnston's confident words on the route the story will take of the popular hero.
"We're sort of putting a slightly different spin on Steve Rogers," said Joe Johnston." He's a guy that wants to serve his country, but he's not a flag-waver. We're reinterpreting, sort of, what the comic book version of Steve Rogers was."
Johnston continues to be some what vague with his choice of words on the different spin of Steve Rogers/Captain America.
"He's just a good person. We make a point of that in the script: Don't change who you are once you go from Steve Rogers to this super-soldier; you have to stay who you are inside, that's really what's important more than your strange and everything. It'll be interesting and fun to put a different spin on the character and one that the fans are really going to appreciate."
"...It's also the idea that this is not about America so much as it is about the spirit of doing the right thing," the director said. "It's an international cast and an international story. It's about what makes America great and what makes the rest of the world great too."
You can leave that for your own interpretation, you make of it what you will. "Captain America: The First Avenger" arrives in theaters on June 22nd, 2011.
