Legendary Films To Get The Gears Of War Turning
By George 'El Guapo' Roush on October 24, 2008
From the trades comes good news for fans of the popular video game Gears of War. It's also a sign to come if movie studios start buying up video game companies as Legendary Studios is in talks to purchase Epic Games:

Legendary may be getting Epic.

Private equity-backed film financier Legendary Pictures is in negotiations to acquire Epic Games, the North Carolina-based developer of videogames including "Gears of War."

Multiple sources close to the companies confirmed that talks are under way, though execs at both Legendary and Epic declined to comment.

News comes less than two weeks after Legendary topper Thomas Tull resigned from the board of Brash Entertainment, the licensing-focused vidgame publisher he co-founded. Talks to buy Epic indicate that Tull remains interested in the videogame space even after leaving Brash out of frustration with its performance.

If the deal is consummated, Legendary would be the first film financing company to start investing money in videogames. Several studios, including Warner Bros., where Legendary is based, have recently started spending their own money on games.

Tull has undoubtedly gotten to know Epic since Legendary came aboard to co-finance New Line's "Gears of War" movie earlier this year.

"Gears" is Epic's most successful game. It has sold more than 5 million units since its 2006 release; a sequel, slated for next month, is expected to perform even better. Company's other successful franchise is "Unreal Tournament."

Beyond its own titles, however, Epic, is best known in the videogame industry for Unreal Engine, a piece of backend technology that's widely used by different developers.

Licensing income from Unreal Engine is one of Epic's primary sources of revenue and would make it a much more reliable income provider for Legendary than other videogame developers that are entirely hit-dependent.

Most game movies are tear your eyes out horrible. I think this movie has the right tools to deliver what us gamers want. It has the right director, Underworld basically felt like a game movie to me. A good writer, and source material (the game's climatic scene on the train was worthy of any Hollywood Summer blockbuster). But I am not sure if this thing will be able to make it's money back. The budget will have to be very high, and most likely it will be an R if it remains true to the game, bad combination. But I think that the worst selling point is the type of action movie we could expect, I mean the game basically felt like a cross between Saving Private Ryan and The Predator in my opinion and I don't think it can grab the non-hardcore-gamer-casual-movie-going-person kind of audience that all big summer action movies need to make the big bucks on movies that usually aren't R-rated. Either way I am a Fanboy of Gears of War with a capital "F", and they will have my money come the second week of opening night, but I worry because if they don't make enough money on this film I won't get my awesome trilogy that I expect from Hollywood big budget movies.
Could be amazing

Or it could suck massively. A faithful adaptian would essesntially Saving Private Ryan with giant aliens, which is cool. However, what i think will really make this movie is the excellent cast of supporting characters, which rivals that of any action movie ever made.
SOUNDS FAMILIAR

when the studio announces 'filming has begun' on a Gears movie is when people with at least half a brain will believe it. that goes double for all that ridiculous 'army of two' movie-talk . by the way, how's that Halo movie comin'?
