According to a rumor over at CHUD, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire might be headlining a remake of the classic The Third Man. I shall now pause for your "ANOTHER EFFIN' REMAKE??" rants. CHUD goes on to say that the new script is being written by Steven Knight (Eastern Promises), but no director is in place.
Everyone's money seems to be going towards Dicaprio starring as Harry Lime (the Orson Welles role), and Spidey as Holly Martins (the Joseph Cotten role). But you know what? I don't like either of those guys for either role, frankly. They are too young, and while Leo has a bit of an edge to his face now, Tobey looks exactly the same. Not to mention that Tobey is kind of limited in his range, and I just can't see him in such an adult role.
I guess what it comes down to for me is that The Third Man is a classic, one of the greats of all time, and there's no reason for a new one. Granted, with those people attached, I'm sure this remake will be at least decent, but why not tell a new story with those talents? I know, it's the same ol' anti-remake argument, but it's true.
