The year is 1930. Florentino Ariza (Javier Bardem) has waited fifty-one years, nine months and four days to declare his undying love – once again – to FERMINA DAZA (Giovanna Mezzogiorno). He has loved her since that fateful day in 1879 when he delivered a telegram to her father, a successful mule trader, and spyed Fermina studying nearby. They exchanged letters in secret for many years, but when he proposed marriage, Fermina’s father rejected him in favor of DR. JUVENAL URBINO (Benjamin Bratt), a wealthy young doctor who made for a more socially acceptable match.
Florentino has spent the intervening years building himself into a shipping magnate, in hopes of being better equipped should the opportunity arise to court Fermina again. At last, it seems that day has arrived: while attempting to retrieve his pet parrot from a tree, 81-year-old Juvenal Urbino fell from a ladder and died. Now, at what may seem like the end of their lives, Fermina and Florentino have been brought together once more. Thus begins Gabriel García Márquez’ epic, unforgettable tale of love in all its guises: young love, carnal love, married love – even love with the symptoms of cholera..
