M. Night Shyamalambdalambda Talks Unbreakable 2

After The Village, Lady In The Water and The Happening I wrote in my review of The Happening that M. Night should leave Hollywood for ten years and come back with something new. That his early success got to his head and he started churning out crappy movie after crappy movie until audience feedback finally got through to his silly little head. He talks to MTV about how he's always asked about a sequel to his best film, Unbreakable:
“I tell you I get asked about it all the time, so it’s not [an idea] I ever forget,” Shyamalan told MTV News. “I genuinely just asked this question the other day — should I make ‘Unbreakable 2’?”
If Shyamalan does indeed decide to revisit “Unbreakable,” he’ll have at least one of the original film’s stars ready and willing to join up — Samuel L. Jackson, who played the very-breakable villain, Elijah Price, in the movie. “Every time I see [Shyamalan], he says, ‘I’ve written this thing for you,’ so I say, ‘why are you always doing these movies I’m not in?’” said Jackson.
According to both Shyamalan and Jackson, “Unbreakable” was originally intended to be a trilogy, but a series of bad reviews as well as fan and film critic misconception of Shyamalan’s work quickly tabled the idea of a possible franchise. As Jackson put it, “He was a victim of what Quentin [Tarrantino] was a victim of. ‘Jackie Brown’ is a great movie, but it’s not ‘Pulp Fiction 2.’ ‘Unbreakable’ is a great movie, but it’s not ‘I see f**king dead people.’”
Likewise, Shyamalan has his own take on the lack of a sequel. “I made the mistake of getting caught up in the hype of the immediate reaction of the movie, which, experience has shown me, is not accurate to any of my movies,” he explained. “And If I had been more confident and said ‘I believe in that movie, I love that movie, and I should just go start writing the second one,” that would’ve been the right move. I’ve still been thinking about it a lot and wonder if it’s too late.” Click the pic to read the rest.
So just because Unbreakable didn't have the greatest critic feedback (67% on Rotten Tomatoes), you decided to ignore a sequel to it and instead give us The Happening years later, which almost every critic on the planet hated (18%). Personally, I loved Unbreakable. It's one of my favorite films and I bought that shit on Blu-Ray as soon as it came out.
Since you're no longer capable of producing a good original film on your own, then try a sequel to your best work. What's the worst that could happen? It would suck? You've already proven time and time again that making sucky movies doesn't stop you so I say go for it. You may win back some of the fans you've lost along the years.

How can you go from the Sixth Sense... To The Happening?? It's like they've been done by 2 different directors. Crazy...

I'm actually really surprised that he didn't say "and I could make it all dark and stuff... like The Dark Knight!"

Let's hope it happens

Hey everybody. I've wanted a lot of stuff to come true. I can't believe Pixies reunited for a tour a couple years ago. If they can come back, anybody can happen. I've wanted a sequel to Unbreakable to happen for years and years now. Hope M. Night revisits the idea and just starts writing.

So, in the Green Lantern script review, LR complains cause there's a Latino stereotype - then turns around and makes fun of Shymalan's name because it sounds funny......Hypocrites/racists much?

Noooo...

El Mayimbe complained about racial stereotypes. I make fun of everyone and everything. Besides, how is making fun of a name being racist? Am I gonna call you a racist of you said my last name was douche instead of Roush? Go have a beer and quit complaining.

Shyamalan is a great director

I loved every single movie by M. Night... The fact that you didn't like them, doesn't mean those films are "crappy"... I've loved "Signs", "The Village" and "The Happening"... and even the undervalued "Lady in the Water" is better than most of the critics says.

Those "crappy" movies were awful! No depth and catered to a rather simple audience. Come on - The Village! M. Night called everyone stupid with that one. Keep your day job. ha.

If...

If you are not deep enough to understand those movies, it's not M. Night's fault... :-)
If you are stupid, is not because Shyamalan called you that way... It's simply because you were born as a stupid... :-)

Not Racist...

Just not funny... at all. Not even if it was intended to not be funny.

UNBREAKABLE 2!
Commented By: Dr Daddy on 2008-09-24 18:22:51
YES!! Haters hate all you want, but "Unbreakable" was one hell of a comic book movie. I've hypothesized on a sequel myself, but always wondered if it would be a world worth revisiting.
After hearing this news, Im glad he's talking sequel. Lets face it, his movies since "The 6th Sense" have all performed poorly ("Unbreakable" left a lot of audiences cold). But comic-book fans knew the gravity of having sucha serious, deliberate superhero story.
A sequel should definitely involve both Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson. Maybe Mr. Glass can escape from prison and continue his search for more people on 'the opposite end of the spectrum".
Mr Glass had "Osteo Genesis Imperfecta" ( I think thats what the disease was called.), and Bruce Willis was the opposite. So maybe there can be other (benefical) opposites to other conditions, such as:
Blindness & Deafness = Sonar
Muscular Dystrophy = Muscle Generation
AIDS = Impervious to germs
Alzheimers = Perfect Memory (this one's real)
Parkinsons = increased agility
I vote yes on Unbreakable 2
I'm Dr. Daddy and I approve this message

If it was made in 2005 the critics would of showered it with praise. I can't wait for the sequel. Sam J's Mr. Glass was beyond riveting.
