Predators Will Use Stan Winston Design

Predators Will Use Stan Winston Design I've got high hopes for Predators, the Robert Rodriguez-produced, Nimród Antal-directed sequel to the Predator franchise. Why do I have high hopes? Because Alien Vs Predator and its horrid sequel can suck both my nuts with their mandibles and dread-locked aliens. Those movies were fun, sure, but not any more fun than the endless comic books and novelizations, some of which managed to find a healthy mix between the tone of the two franchises (yes, I've read multiple ones...because I'm a sad, sad man).

Attempts at sequalizing Predator have resulted in two crossover movies and one straight sequel. Even in that sequel, the Predator was re-designed (to be more urban, whatever that means). Predator 2's re-design was re-designed for Alien Vs. Predator and then the filmmakers tried to "return" to the original Stan Winston model in the AvP: Requiem redesign.

Though, they could have just asked Stan Winston at that point, right? Which is what makes this news so exciting:

This morning I had a chance to chat to KNB’s Howard Berger (on the set of “The Chronicles of Narnia : Voyage of the Dawn Treader” here in Australia) who assured me that the fans are going to be very happy with the ‘Predator’ (or should I say ‘Predators’) that his team have created for the Robert Rodriguez-produced “Predators”.

“I just saw some photos today and they look absolutely fantastic!”, says Berger, who got his start working with Stan Winston on films like “Predator” and “Aliens”. ‘’Greg [Nicotero] is supervising and masterminding that one. So we're in pre-production on [it] right now.’’

Berger, who won an Oscar for his work on the first “Chronicles of Narnia” film (and whose latest film, “Surrogates”, opens this week), says ‘’we wanted to have the Predator look as it did in the original film. We went back and looked at the original. I actually worked in the shop with Stan Winston on the first film. It was great to be able to go back to the series having not been involved in any of the sequels, and it was also great to be able to make sure we built them as Stan Winston did.’’

[...]

‘’They look really fantastic. There's a whole bunch of cool [Predator's] in the film, and everyone's going to be very happy that we've been very faithful to the Stan Winston designs. It's out next year. It's shooting very soon.’’

There's a more detailed account at the source that mentions more Narnia and Priest, but the basic gist is there: someone is designing new Predators with Stan Winston at the forefront of his mind. Since Winston's passing, that's the best anyone can do.

Predators will start shooting soon in Austin and Hawaii, as soon as Rodriguez and company finish Machete.
