Red Sonja Won't Start Swinging Her Sword Until Next Year.

With Conan now on the fast track, Red Sonja, a film Rodriguez and McGowan talked about at last year's Comic-Con, has been put on the back burner. But why?

According to Coventrytelegraph.net, producer Joe Gatta explains why we won't be seeing the hot tempered redhead until late 2010:

"Because of certain issues and the economy, we had to change our plan a bit. It's frustrating because we thought we'd make the movie last year, before Conan."

He is confident Red Sonja will go before cameras in 2010, and confirms it will be an origin story that ignores the previous movie and is instead based on the original Marvel comic book heroine created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith in 1973.

The character was partly inspired by a pistol-toting Renaissance warrior called Red Sonya (spelled with a 'y') in a short story by Robert E. Howard, the creator of Conan.

Gatta had last month told Empire Online: "I would say though the emphasis is on Conan [rather than Red Sonja]. It's our crown jewel here at the company and that will be the leader. Red Sonja probably won't happen until next year, as far as making it goes. So we want to launch Conan and reinvent the franchise."

I'm still not 100% sold on Rose McGowan as Red Sonja. I imagine Red Sonya as much...taller and more powerful in stature than someone like Rose. But we'll see.

What do you guys think of Rose as Red McGowan?
