Richard Donner Says, No Lethal Weapon 5

The best news of the day comes from the blog over at the LA Times and Richard Donner stating that Mel Gibson said "piss off" to doing a 5th Lethal Weapon movie:

"Mel turned it down," Donner said. "I would like to think that Mel turned it down because I wasn't involved. Knowing Mel, I would like to think that. Would that be the kind of thing he does? It sure would be."

Ego aside, this is nothing but good news because I didn't understand why Warner Brothers wanted to move on a 5th Lethal Weapon. But who knows, things change so fast in this town it could still happen.

Donner also talks about Superman:

What would Donner like to see next for the Last Son of Krypton? He didn't hesitate. "I'd like to see Geoff Johns take a crack at the Superman...I think he would be startling. Did you read his comics? There it is. It's there on paper." Johns is a star writer in comics, of course, but before that, the Detroit native worked in Donner's office as an assistant to the filmmaker. Once again, Donner thinks the smart way to do business is to put a premium on loyalty and good ideas. "The studio hasn't gone to him and said, 'Give us a screenplay.' That would be the smart thing to do, but that's show biz. Right? Show biz, that's our life."

  • That was a close one...

Thank fuck for that, even if Shane Black and Richard Donner were attached it would still suck. Mel's biblebashing and Danny too old for this shit! And they wanted a guy from Stomp The fucking Yard for murtaugh jnr??? Once again thank fuck they stopped this in time!

  • I agree, THANK GOD

Say what you will about the Lethal Weapon sequels, but they finished out the entire series after 11 years with the ENTIRE original cast, taking the central character arcs full circle and *literally* closed the book on the series. The movie Shane Black would have made is the film he tried to make nearly 20 years ago before he was replaced by Jeffrey Boam on Part 2. I would rather he use his extraordinary talents on something more original like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang or Cold Warrior than get relabeled as "that 80's action writer". I say let the franchise rest in peace and let's stay away from more movies with aged, tired actors making jokes about their disposition while getting upstaged by younger actors nobody paid to see. Also, put me in the AGREE box for Geoff Johns on a Superman script.

Last I heard, Shane Black was writing the script for LW5. Given on how awsome LW1 was, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, I was actually looking forward to #5.
