Sam Jackson. Is He In Iron Man 2?

By George 'El Guapo' Roush on October 19, 2008
At today's press junket for Soul Men Sam was asked if he would be in Iron Man 2. He said he spoke with Favreau last night and was told he is in the sequel. What his role is, or how big it would be, he didn't expand upon. But he did joke about making sure to sign a contract after what happened with Terrence Howard.

So good news for Sam and Nick Fury fans that these characters and the story arc is staying consistent and is continuing.

The ultimate version of Nick Fury is black and marvel even admitted they based his look off of Sam Jackson. Pick up a comic book people.
Fury Casting

this is probably only news to Fontez, but Sam Jackson being cast was a nod to the Ultimates comic, which has characters modeled after actual celebrities.

As many have already noted, Nick fury is modelled on Sam Jackson in Marvel's Ultimate line. The character and his circumstances are probably one of the best things about it.

Heheh would you rather have David Hasselhoff back in that role? heheheh Sam Jackson was a great pick for Nick Fury... relax.
Really?
Commented By: Sean on 2008-10-20 10:52:39
Yeah he eventually became black... but the original Nick Fury was white... Im sure it prolly changed around 1985 or whenever it was b/c black ppl for some reason still think they were apart of slavery today and they think that a lot of things need to be black. Seriously... Wild Wild West with Will Smith... You dont see white ppl with a White Entertainment Telivision channel like BET. Im not racist but i just really get tired of black people thinking they need to change stuff like this b/c black dont have it equal.

It's crazy that after people say something racist, they always follow it up with something trying to claim they aren't racist. I saw Iron Man and when Sam Jackson walked in and said he was Nick Fury, all i could think was this is so bad ass. I don't know where all this crap on black and white comes in. Who cares. Sam J is bad ass and he would make a great Nick Fury hands down.
racist?
Commented By: vivaldo on 2008-10-20 12:48:39
it's not racist to not want a black actor to play a white character. it's no different than if they did a movie of luke cage and made him white.. it's just not true to the character. yes ultimate nick fury was based on sam jackson, but that made no sense. i just don't like the idea of changing the race of a character just to be more diverse. there are plenty of good black characters they can use like the black panther, luke cage, storm, bishop, war machine, etc.

Dude You're clueless
Commented By: Mark on 2008-10-20 13:06:18
In the past the was 100 percent whiteness. But this is the 21st century- it needs to be more diverse. Neo was supposed to be black but then Keanu got the role and he worked better in it. No one complained there. Be color blind like me!

"Neo was supposed to be black but then Keanu got the role and he worked better in it. " Whoever lost out to Keanu must have sucked something terrible.

What difference does the color of the actor playing the character make as long as the personality of the character the actor portrays is true?

seriously, the black-white issue doesnt bother me as long as it doesnt interfere with the character's back story, i.e. a white Luke Cage would be a travesty. a black Captain america would be ridiculas (a 1940's american government would not have used a black man as an american icon) a Black Nick Fury? doesnt hurt his backstory's credibility. and The Ultimate line of comics (tho i hate them) modeled nick after ol Sammy L. but thats just my two cents. Character's changing skin color only makes me mad when it hurts the believability of their story.
dudes, calm it

ok... to the one marked " Really?" about 10 comments down... ok first of all, im a white dude and i was just offended by how bad people like you make us look. not only was what you wrote ignorant i.e "White entertainment Television" lol dude, 90% of TV is "White Entertainment" but it was just plain racist and misinformed. nick fury never "changed" in '85, they simply created an alternate reality in which he happened to be black. I agree that a white Luke Cage would be terrible because he would loose his brilliant backstory. just as a black Captain America wouldnt make sense because in 1940's the US gov would not enlist a black man to become an american icon. Look, I hear people say dumb stuff and follow up with "im not racist" heres the hint: if you make blanket generalizations based off of a person's race, you are racist. maybe what you meant was "im not a violent racist"
Underrepresentation
Commented By: sacredchao on 2008-10-20 19:46:33
So, even though African Americans feel they are underrepresented in the media, they don't have a right to ask for more representation, or in the case of BET, create it for themselves? Your all full of crap. Get over your tiny little selves and look at the real world. People who lived under segregation are still alive today. Just because you don't remember anything before 1992 doesn't mean it didn't happen, or that it doesn't affect today's world.

There is an undue amount of discussion over the race issue in my opinion as far as the Nick Fury Role is concerned. I will happily admit that as a long time Marvel Comics reader, my expectation would have been to see a white actor playing the role. Yet that is not what happened here. It appears that both the director and Marvel feel more comfortable with an 'Ultimates' version of the character. And, despite my initial shock, it is a role he could play convincingly. Really, I will take that over that debacle involving David Hasselhoff's gross misinterpretation of the character not so very long ago. It made me queasy. The other point I wanted to address is how I am starting to be a bit bothered by seeing the same big name actors in recurring roles. You can't tell me there isn't a capable actor knocking on doors in Hollywood that couldn't play the role. Kinda like casting Jackman as Wolvie. After I was done picking my mouth up off of the floor, and had ample time to watch his performances, I would have to admit that it was a good choice. Great in fact.
I hate the Ultimates
Commented By: Down with Ultimates on 2008-10-21 02:10:13
And for that reason, I for one have been and still am against Jackson playing Nick Fury. This isn't "Ultimate Iron Man." I wish Marvel would just clean house, dump the Ultimates and get back to basics. It's really screwing up what could be a great movie series.
are you all joking?

on 2008-10-21 13:15:26
nobody in hollywood really cares about what comic book readers think....they are looking for a much wider audience than you...comics provide them with the storylines (as literature always has), but they can and will change anything to suit their marketing needs

Who care is Sam plays Nick Fury? He's a great actor. The last actor to play Nick was in 1998. Remember who? David Hasselhoff!! Do you really want that again?
sam is the man

some say it doesn`t matter but the reality is is that it does if you are a true comic fan now Nick is black in the ultimates just let it be guys now a white luke and a black cap would presents some problems. if they died in the comics and came back with a diffrent coluor well then that will be diffrent. I am a black guy and i grew up on comics I want to keep it as real as possible

Overall I think Marvel is playing it safe with Sam playing Nick Fury. Sure he'll do alright and we all know what the box office numbers will be. I'd like to see someone I'm not familiar with to play the role. Someone I'm not worried about dying by the end of the film like in some other cases... *cough* PULP FICTION *cough*. Give me something fresh, not someone I've seen get eaten alive by a damn shark.
