Sleep Dealer Trailer Hits

By Kellvin Chavez on September 16, 2008
The folks over at Maya Entertainment are taking a big step into the mainstream, with the distribution and acquiring all U.S. rights to Alex Rivera's Sundance award-winner "Sleep Dealer." Now the official website has released the trailer for the film.

The film stars Luis Fernando Pena, Leonor Varela and Jacob Vargas. Sleep Dealer is set to hit theaters in Feb 2009.

If you're a fan of early sci-fi indie films like Shane Carruth's PRIMER and Darren Aronofsky's PI then Sleep Dealer is right up your alley, its like a Mexican Matrix or THX 1138.

Set in a near-future, militarized world marked by closed borders, virtual labor and a global digital network that joins minds and experiences, three strangers risk their lives to connect with each other and break the barriers of technology.

Check out the trailer below.

I'm sorry but...

That looks cheesier then Quesadilla Con Pollo. By no means do I intend to offend anyone but, Salsa Music, Science Fiction, space ships, robots and Mexico just don't mix. First off, where the hell did these Mexicans get the money to purchase all of these robots and flashy technology, not realistic at all. And Second, maybe it's just me but portraying Mexicans as slave workers in any capacity is offensively stereotypical... Robotic sci-fi or not. This movie looks dumb.

Looks pretty cool, but the costumes could use some work.

Meh, dosen't look that bad a NEW twist on/in the si-fi genre. Plus they got the hot chick from Blade II. Though the whole plug in thing was straight from the Matrix like you said. But my friends like these under the radar films I'll tell'em to check it out.

Looks like an interesting idea but..

That has to be one of the worst trailers I have ever seen. It really looks like whoever put the trailer together didn't know what specific idea they wanted to convey.

looks like the Movies "City of God" meets "the Matrix" a very low budget Matrix. Leonor Varela is looking good. I know how hard it is to scrape up funds. It is obvious the ambition was greater than the funds but if the story can hold its own then you can compare it to "Darren Aronofsky's PI" it looks more like Robert Rodriguez's "El Mariachi"

Looks like one of the better possible views of the future. The aMERICAN dream, robots doing all the work, closed borders, plugged in (facebook anyone?) and no life. Hope its good.
Stupid White People....

@Fontez: Because Mexicans don't have any money and make their living off of selling cocaine to gringos, right? Let the Mexicans decide what is offensively stereotypical, shut the fuck up and come back with an educated opinion, you stupid prick.
You didn't get it?

I'm reading some of these comments and maybe you guys have the right take on this, but I think you're wrong. It looked to me like the US sealed off its borders and sent illegal immigrants back to Mexico. The illegals continued to do their jobs that they did back home, but instead of physically doing them, they plugged into robots and do all the work remotely. I don't think that the Mexicans themselves purchased the robots, it looks like the US put them there to be used by other people. Hopefully the plot isn't as weak as that little synopsis, because I honestly could not tell what kind of fucking message they were trying to convey.

well, u.s. tax payers paid for the visas, and corps paid for the robots. considering cost of operating a machine, plus minimum wage, minus tax kickbacks from the govt, ill invest - allows u.s. to focus on making more reality tv! yay!

Did you not understand what was going on? They were controlling machines in America. So all of the infrastructure was most likely paid for by an American company. And the portrayal of Mexicans as slave workers isn't offensive, it's realistic. Especially if it is a film made by Mexicans it is obviously just a reflection of how they see their world and their place in America as disenfranchised and shut out.

on 2008-09-18 02:34:12
As someone who's done a little bit of computer vision, I can tell you - we don't need anyone on the other side, controlling the machine (almost). But within 5 years, we WILL be able to close off the border and get robots to pick the strawberries.

the mexicans have terrible cocaine.

Get your sci-fi and technology idioms straight: Ever heard of "tele-presence?" * Those aren't "space ships" -- they are remotely-piloted UAVS * the people using the equipment remotely didn't have "buy" it * that's not "salsa music"
embarassed by you

First, I'm embarassed by some of the racists comments that are coming out of peoples mouths? The trailer isn't Blade Runner by any means but there has been far worse out at the theater on a daily basis. But then again, if you actually have a passport then you'd know that mexicans aren't all poor, only most of illegal immigrants that initially come here just like Americans who are now running off to Europe that can't make a decent dollar in our economy either. There's still a few million mexican's that stay home for a reason. Give me a break

robots will not be even close to human energy efficiency and capabilities anytime soon. this film is so far fetched it's silly. cheap imported manual labor is the way to go for another 200-250 years.. people overestimate the pace of technological development. basic stuff takes a lot of time. the only thing that might enable something like this in the near term is technological singularity..

For those that noticed they used actual war footage (at 01:12) filmed from an Apache where it basically cut three people to pieces with its 30mm gun, using footage of actual people dying (regardless if they were bad/armed/pedos) is extremely tasteless.
A great big mexican deal...

anyone of u has realized it's a Sci-Fi film??? Sci=Science + Fi=Fiction ... stop wondering why and why not... how can those people... bla bla bla... is it s perhaps conceivable that one single US citizen gets on a UFO plain and destroys the whole ALIEN army in just the five last minutes of a film? its sci-fi... lets enjoy as it is... robots... past... future.. massive mind control... AI ... whatever! the more the better! i think this film is a great big mexican deal for the mexican and international cinema ... enjoy the Sci-Fi... don't try to racionalize it! ... and over all... peace for all.
