Spider-Man 4 And 5 Swing Back To Back. Both To Have Tobey and Raimi

Reddit

By George 'El Guapo' Roush on September 5, 2008

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Sony has locked in both Tobey McGuire and Sam Raimi for Spider-Man 4 and 5:

It's time to end once and for all the rampant speculation. Sony doesn't want any info to leak but I'm told that both star Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi will be returning to make Zodiac screenwriter Jamie Vanderbilt's script of Spider-Man 4. Sources tell me that Sony has recently locked in both veterans of Spider-Man 1 through 3. And I do mean recently because just a few weeks ago sources told me that Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal was openly discussing Tobey's potential replacements [A topic we covered back in May] with various Hollywood agents because Tobey was hanging tough about a deal. "She was looking around to cover herself because Sony wanted him badly and Tobey wasn't sure he wanted to do it," an insider explained to me. There's no deal yet for Kirsten Dunst but Mary Jane Watson will be in the movie again. I'm told Sony "would never recast her" despite her rehab problems. But expect another gal part, too.

Sony would never recast Kirsten Dunst? Why? Was she that awesome in the role? I don't think so. There are a ton of actresses who coud play the part. Besides, Mary Jane in the comic books looked more...what's the word I'm looking for...womanly to me. Is womanly a word? If it isn't, then it is now.

The article continues on about the spinoff Venom movie that I believe can only be awesome as fuck or suck major donkey balls. I don't think there will be any middle ground on this one:

And Sony has hired a pair of screenwriters to get going on the Spider-Man spinoff movie Venom. Given that comic book artist/writer and action figure maker, Todd McFarlane, who is one of the creators of the Marvel villain, doesn't think a Venom movie could do well with a villain as the central character, my sources think Sony should let Topher Grace, even though he was blown up at the end of Spider-Man 3 (yet a portion of the Venom costume survived), stay in the role because the likeable actor could be a a sympathetic evildoer.

Click HERE to read the entire article.

This whole Spider-Man thing really makes me angry. Here's what I would have done:

They had an awesome opportunity to do a back to back Spider-Man 3 and 4 with Venom in the 3rd movie as the sole villain and a carry over Carnage story for the 4th. Sure, you could do some small thing with Harry Osborn in the 3rd, but the main plot would have been the creation of Venom and how he hates Parker/Spider-Man. In the middle of the movie is an enormous fight where Venom kicks the shit out of Spider-Man, leaving him almost dead, but telling him he's not  going to kill him. He's going to make him suffer first by going after the ones he loves. This creates a big battle at the end with Harry helping Peter defeat and kill Venom. (Just my basic story outline)

This cover right here helps to explain what I'm talking about.

Imagine the end of the 3rd movie. Carnage comes into play after Venom is defeated with a 'To Be Continued' seconds after. Fans would have shit in their pants. Then part 4 is Spider-Man really fighting for his life when this psycho, Cletus Kasady, gets loose on the streets with Venom's offspring.

They could have even had Venom live for a huge Venom/Carnage fight. Make Spider-Man and Venom become unwilling allies (Harry is still dead) to take down Carnage because he's become a threat to both of them. THAT could have led to a Venom spin-off movie.

But noooooo, nobody in Hollywood wants to think ahead. So for Spider--Man 3 we got stuck with 10 minutes of Venom and Peter Parker dancing on tables in a jazz club. Awesome.

What do you guys think should be the story for 4 and 5? Should it be one big story or separate stories? And what villains would they use? Kraven? Hobgoblin? Rhino? Shocker?

Comment away people. Maybe we can make some noise so they can get it right this time.

  • Why ???

Venom is a pretty lame character to start off anyway...and then they made him metro sexual in the movie. I know there are plenty of Venom fans but realisticly it's just because he looked scary and bad ass in the comics, not actually a great character. Plenty of better villians to chose over Venom.

  • Seriously

I think that they should make the Venom spin-off a franchise if it does well. (Or ever even gets made.) I also think that it should pick up right at the end of Spider-Man 3. Forget Eddie Brock, he's dead. We all saw him die at the end. I think that if they do a spin-off, it should make the symbiote the main character...or it should make Mac Gargan it's new host like it did in the comics. As for Spider-Man 4, It shouldn't be made. Why? Because, just like the origional Batman franchise, maybe a fourth movie would end up completely destroying the franchise. Or maybe I'm wrong and it will be good. All I'm saying is, we don't want another Batman & Robin.

  • just make it good

spider-man 3 sucked. but whoever said that iron-man is a more interesting character then spider-man is a moron. spider-man and batman are the two greatest superheroes period. one bad movie does not ruin a series. don't matter what people say now just like batman if spider-man 4 is good people will suck the series' cock all over again. they just need to wash the bad spider-man 3 taste out of people's mouths.

  • Why it failed?

What happened to the Spiderman movies is that spiderman stopped growing up as a hero and even in his personal life. If you keep developing the characters, people will connect to them and their struggles in a way that they will be interested enough and will see the next movie, just like the dark knight. They can use one villain or even 3 villains like in Spiderman 3 and people wont be satisfied if the character does not move forward. Spiderman 4 and 5 could be great if they write an appealing story and use villains that could support the story, not a story that support more villains.

  • Who cares?

Honestly, the spiderman franchise needs to be allowed to rest and breathe for a bit, to give the people involved a chance to come up with something good. Spiderman 3 was among the worst big budget comic book films I've seen in awhile. Awful story-telling, utter and complete ripoffs of other movies, and attempting to rewrite its own history via flashbacks was just terrible. There are far more compelling, interesting characters being made into films now (Iron Man, etc.), but spiderman is too much of a money maker for the studio to keep out of the theater for long.

  • STICK TO THE SCRIPT

I like the Kraven Idea, I actually think they should stay away from Spiderman/Venom story all together. I would be happy if they did the story with Kraven, Vermin and spider man with a higher focus on Kraven and how he to being and how spider man is his ultimate prey. Yeah, story where spiderman is buried alive and Kraven then shoots his head off at the end. What is good about that story is that instead of watching spider feel sorry for himself over his superhero normal dude complex, we give the fans a chance to do that when dude is buried alive, and we also see how hard spidey to fight to gain back his identity after Kraven steals it while Spider is MIA 9 feet deep. A new found appreciation. A story like that brings a new aspect to the spiderman franchise and then later, after that I would go into the hobgoblin, kingpin story lines then bring back venom and go into the carnage stories. Hopefully by then marvel has the rights to spiderman back and we can see the introduction of wolverine and or daredevil "a good dare devil" For comic readers, they know that characters like wolverine are the guys that try to slap sense into spidey telling him to stop feeling sorry for himself. Who didn't love that book where spidey and wolverine were fighting. Spider man ended up with his hands around wolverines neck which he would be strong enough to break and from what i remember wolverine hands were positioned just under spidermans chest. snikt!!! wicked..spider man is a light hearted character who lives in a dark world with very dark and complex villans..he has more complex foes and friends than even batman does...it's the best situation to exploit for film...man I'm just gonna write my own issh....Just an idea...basically all I'm saying is STICK TO THE SCRIPT!!!!

  • LMAO

I agree... Sony SHOULD hire you. Truth is Raimi completely destroyed the storyline. The ironic part is... He set himself up to tell the story properly and then didn't even follow his own game plan. As soon as Jameson's son John was introduced, I KNEW Venom was coming. But instead we get some homosexual asteroid that lands 50ft away from a freakin superhero and he doesn't even notice... Way to use your spidey sense dumbass. Mankind prepares a return to the moon since 1969, John is the commandeering the shuttle, touches down, see's something from the corner of his eye has he enters the shuttle. The symbiotic alien life form known as Venom, latches on to the ship and kills everyone in the cockpit, forcing it to crash on the brooklyn bridge on the way back. Spiderman attempts to save the astronauts but finds himself covered in what he believes to be oil or rocket fuel... Is that an opening sequence to a movie or what ?!?!?

  • Spiderman 3

feel victim to the more is better cliche. More villains in one movie has to make it better right. So we have Harry as the Green Goblin at first, then Sand Man and Venom. It would have been better if they had just left out sand man and focus more on making Venom better. They screwed up the suit, like it clinging to the spidey suit instead of Peter and him easily being able to take it off and put it in a box one minute to him ripping and tearing at it to get it off in another scene. They kinda got it better with Eddie Brock, but Topher Grace wasn't muscular enough to play the part IMO. Then like everyone else pointed out, they killed off Brock, so WTF now? As far as 4 and 5, they should definitely do something with Lizard since they have been showing so much of Dr. Conners. And they should find some way to bring back Venom. Ooo..maybe they will pull a fast one like they did in 3 about how Peter's uncle died, "ummm yea, it really wasn't that guy, it was this guy." Whala! Sandman enters. So maybe in 4 they could be like, "ugh yea, that dude really wasn't Eddie Brock, he was some inTARnet H@cKEr who had stolen Brock's identity so he could land that sweet job as a photographer for the local gossip paper. This is the real Eddie Brock." Enter The Rock or Goldberg. They got the muscles. And then in 5 have Carnage somehow, and the guy who played Angel in Xmen 3 should play him...yay...Sony should hire me.

  • I like the venom/carnage what if

the venom/carnage scenario for 3 and 4 would've worked very nicely. Has enough plot twists to make a very compelling story for the general public. Hopefully Raimi will have enough control this time to make an evenly paced movie. For the sequels 4 and 5, I'm hoping they follow a Lizard/Kraven the Hunter storyline. They kind of lost a Hobglobin connection by having the Osbornes killed off if they want to stick to canon. The Shocker and Rhino should held off for a while since they have to create compelling movies to bring back the public's interest in the franchise.

or... spidey gets killed like in the 1987 episode 49 of the comic series. He could be wearing the amulet of reasoning and be able to communicate to Mary Jane and save her from an arsenic end. However, we find out that Peter has a hot tennis player as a lover and mary jane attaches to the alien symbiote. this way, we keep it orginal to code as well as creating a love-rage infused female symbiote. As my brother would say: HOT!

First and for most- @db3b, if u don't have anything useful to say then don't say anything at all. Second. To follow up what the author was saying about 3 into 4, i agree. Hollywood needs to take back all the Spiderman 3 movies, burn them, burn the ashes, then bury the ashes in a deep dark cave; and then they need to re shoot Spiderman 3 the way the author explained it. Needs more Vemon and it must end with Carnage being created.

  • Spiderman 3

was so brutally bad, it killed the franchise for me. The whole movie was just one massive RAHAHAHA after the next...it was awful. And yes, the dancing? okay?? I'm not bothering with spiderman movies anymore, and after dark knight, i really cant see spiderman 4 coming close to its success...just watch spiderman 3 again and convince yourself to care about subsequent sequels.

  • better villians needed

did anyone think the cartoon series did a better job at portraying Venom as the Villain. I like how in Spiderman 2, the son of the newpaper guy, the astronaut loses out to peter and is how super-pissed at spiderman. the whole 'astronauts wife' thing happens where more realistically an alien symbiotically attaches itself to him in space. and now he crashes joined with Venom to spew his vengeance and hate on spiderman. instead we got Eddie Brock, a loser who hates peter cause he takes better pictures than him, boo hoo. in the cartoon series, i think the symbiote then immediately goes to Eddie, the hateful jealous lover was much more interesting/realistic than 'meteor crashes next to peter' storyline. Venom just looks cool as shiz, but his storyline is weak. Spidermans enemies arent that cool compared to other comic heroes. They need a character with more substance. Sandman was kinda interesting in last movie, fighting for his daughter, but hardly used.

  • I hope Marvel Gets the Rights back

Marvel has started to get the rights to the villians back... I hope they get Spidey back in full... A complete Marvel Universe on film? One could only dream

  • My Idea

I agree with you on the spidey 3-4 thing...with venom and spidey joining forces.....Venom was always one of my fav. villians..,(all though im a hudge batman fan) and spidey 3 made Venom stupid....In the comics venom wouldn't need Sandman to take peter down.....So you see Venom in action for about 7min. of the movie......then kill him off....I MEAN COME ON!!!!! And you only see black suit spidey in one fight scene....Spidey 3 should have been harry ,sandman, marry jane.........Spidey 4/5 Venom and Carnage......
