Star Trek Finds Its Checkov
By Ryan 'The Rican with the Irish name' McLelland on August 8, 2007

We all know that J.J. Abrams is helming the 11th Star Trek film due for release in December 2008. We all know that the film is about a young James T. Kirk and the Enterprise crew. We also know that, this being a J.J. Abrams film, we know nothing else about the movie.
Until now...
Russian-born Anton Yelchin is in negotiations to play Pavel Checkov, who is the Russian-born navigator of the USS Enterprise. Who? Well Yelchin played the naive younger brother kidnapped by Emile Hirsch and Justin Timberlake in Alpha Dog, a role he played quite well while surrounded around many of Hollywood's veterans.
Yelchin is the second young cast member to be fitted into a role thus far, the first being Heroes' Zachary Quinto playing Mr. Spock. It has been already confirmed that Leonard Nimoy, the original Spock, will also be in the new film playing...Mr. Spock.
I don't get it either, but I'm sure it will all make sense come next December.
Casting is still underway to find the other pivotal roles of Kirk, Bones, Uhura, Sulu, and Scotty. Abrams is producing the tentpole through his Paramount-based Bad Robot shingle. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci penned the screenplay and will executive produce along with Bryan Burk and Damon Lindelof.
