Star Trek: Is Captain Pike Aboard?
By Ryan 'The Rican with the Irish name' McLelland on October 26, 2007

Come back with me a moment...won't you?
If you aren't a Trekkie you might not know that Captain James T. Kirk was NOT the first captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise. That went to Captain Christopher Pike played originally by Jeffrey Hunter.
Pike commandered for the original pilot which was rejected and when the new pilot came about Pike was gone and Kirk was in. The character appeared again in an episode of the original Star Trek series but has n'ere heard from again.
Until now?!?!??!
As the eleventh Star Trek film is a new prequel, it seems a great possibility that not only is Captain Pike back...but he is the captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise and NOT KIRK!
Slashfilm had this to say about the plot of the film (and be forewarned...this could be a big spoiler!!!!!!!!!!!):
The new Star Trek film will focus much more on Spock than on the crew of the Enterprise. Also, the adventure takes place on a USS Enterprise commanded by Captain Christopher Pike(!), with Pike and crew being helped out by Kirk but not until much later in the film. It’s unknown what ship Kirk would be serving on, but he is not yet a captain at that time. Finally, none of the film takes place at all at Starfleet Academy.
Interesting...is it not!??!?! I really think so and I think having something like this is a great play on the politics of television production.
And would Pike survive? In the Star Trek series he was actually hurt trying to save some cadets and ended up in a wheelchair and was seen in that chair in one more episode (which featured a different actor playing the role).
Now the name thrown around to play the good Captain has been...Tom Cruise. Excuse me while I vomit (HHHAAAARRUMMMMMPPPPHHHH...) Ewwww...corn. Hopefully Paramount would never, ever, ever do that especially with Cruise having left their fold several years ago.
Who would I like??? Possibly Will Smith (yes I know he's black I'm not blind...I just think he'd do a great job) or maybe Matthew McConaghey if he could lose the Southern for a film. Possibly John Cusack because...well...I love John Cusack.
UPDATED: I've actually gotten a few e-mails with one name that has been said to being thrown around. Even if it's just wishful casting or whom producers are actually going after...I like the name. Josh Lucas. He's a good actor and yet when I watch him in movies I sometimes want to cripple him (Hulk, that Reese Alabama movie I was dragged to).
But still interesting to have Pike back in the Star Trek fold! What do you think??? Give Ryan your three cents at
