Terrence Howard Talks About Not Being In Iron Man 2
By George 'El Guapo' Roush on
October 19, 2008
NPR, the popular yet most boring shit to listen to on the radio, had an interview with Terrence Howard where he talks about carpentry (Jesus complex. Kidding.) and galaxies. You really should hear the galaxies part. Only two types of people have this conversation. Normal people after drinking sixteen bottles of wine, or Terrence Howard.
But he's also asked about Iron Man 2. I'll transcribe it for you so you don't have to listen to the interview and fall asleep like I almost did. Well, except when he started talking about the universe, because that shit was gold.
You're not gonna be Jim Rhodes in Iron Man 2.
Howard: Ya, I found that out too.
Really? They didn't... Howard: It was the surprise of a lifetime. There was no explanation. I read something in the trades that implicated it was about money or something but apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren't worth the paper that they're printed on. And promises aren't kept. Good faith negotiations aren't always held up. You know, even friendships, people that you support...
And then he started talking about some shit when he was a kid or something. Let's look at what he says a bit more closely...
"The surprise of a lifetime" is not the appropriate thing to say when talking about not getting an acting role. Here's what it should be used for:
1. When the girl you slept with ten years ago knocks on your door to introduce you to Jr.
2. You round third base only to find out that cute chick you met at the bar has a bigger dick than you do.
3. "So Doctor, what's the story? I need plenty of rest?" "Well, got some good news and some bad news. Good news, it's not the flu. Bad news, it's AIDS."
Lets look at some of his other talking points then. He said contracts aren't worth the paper they're printed on. Promises aren't kept and good faith negotiations aren't held up. If he signed a contract, then why would he need promises? I don't remember if he signed on for sequels like Downey initially did.
Now, some other websites are crying foul about how Terrence got screwed, how he should come back, etc. But we're only hearing one side of the story and we may never know the truth. For all we know, the guy could have been an enormous pain in the ass during the shoot of the first movie, and it was in everyone's best interest to just move on to another actor. Money? Maybe. But I think there could be more to it than that if the money excuse is news to even Terrence himself. I'm now about to dig a bit deeper into why this happened.
Here's a clue that comes later on in the interview that this whole thing may not have been about money at all. Terrence talks about the universe around the 11:10 mark. I'll kind of break it down for you. He did some math the other day and this is what he came up with. On his own, mind you:
May I ask finally, are you at a point in your life, where you realize, that life, like the universe, is finite?
Howard:Yes. I did some math a couple of days ago. And I said there's 6 billion human beings on this planet. And our galaxy, the Milky Way galaxy, 600 quadrillion miles across, there's over a hundred billion stars. If you were to take each human being on this planet, and put them in a different star system on our very own galaxy there would still be 94 billion star systems. Unoccupied. [At this point you hear the biggest sigh ever heard from a host on public radio.] Life. Is extremely precious and that's why it's passed down from mother and father and it takes two to make one. That's how powerful and precious life is.
Imagine if you're Jon Favreau and you have to listen to shit like that every day while on set. Look, I'm not saying it couldn't have been money, I'm just sayin'...

HEY LOOK I'M EL GUAPO Commented By: Artemio on 2008-10-19 08:01:33 Hm, yes, allow me to digress from the article as written in order to make the most awkward, infantile jokes possible. Like how boring NPR is and how hilarious dicks and AIDS are, luckily it's the year 2003 and that shit is still funny, otherwise this article would be a complete waste of everybody's time! Latinoreview.com has NEVER BEEN BETTER.
Simple Observation Commented By: Fontez on 2008-10-19 10:30:52 The guy below me is a douche... That is all.
Ah well.... Commented By: Austin on 2008-10-19 14:17:07 Say what you will, what's done is done. Terrence is out and Don is in. At least they've got an actor and not some cheesy B-Movie, Sci-fi Saturday night, CW comedy wannabe star to play Jim Rhodes. I'm still on board with this movie...Now, if they change actors for IM 3 or Avengers......
Commented By: DoctorDoom on 2008-10-19 14:48:58 How about some solid reporting on this matter? Was this about money or something else? Common "El Guapo" get us the scoop! I also agree that the dude at the bottom is a douche. An ignorant douche to be precise!!
Quantum thoughts Commented By: OscarWao on 2008-10-19 16:02:42 Howard says that he wouldn't want his son to be in show business(be an actor) because he would stop participating and become more of an observer in life. Well, Quantum Physics is proving that one cannot simply be an observer in life, because the simple act of observing makes you a participant. Whatever you observe, is essentially your reality. There you go "El Guapo", more for you to chew on/drink about and dude relax, his mother just passed on, maybe that's why he's in such deep thought. Still, it's cool to find out there are actors/performers that have other interests other than what they're known for. Actually I learned more about you than Howard with this piece. Here is the website pertaining to/about Quantum Physics.

Keep up the good work, looking forward to hearing more news on "The Green Lantern" from you'se guys and also about the next Batman movie and who'll be in it, since you guys were the first to report about Heath Ledger getting the "Joker" role. Hasta luego.
My Initial Impulse Is To Blame Marvel Commented By: captainCAPSLOCK on 2008-10-20 01:16:14 Every one remember when JON FAVREAU didn't even know if he was going to direct this? My guess is that Marvel shelved any War Machine plots to focus and the Avengers *** and saved $$$ going with Cheadle. No way you ditch Howard if Rhodes is gonna play a bigger part...if you're smart. Wonder how many execs were giggling when he said 'next time, baby' whilst watching the Blu Ray.
And one more note - they really blew an opportunity to have a great Black Panther! Cheadle would have owned that role.
EL GUAPO IS NOT COMMON!!! on 2008-10-20 11:28:45

Terence Howard Like Planet Sex Commented By: RalphieMays on 2008-11-25 11:25:56 So what Terrence Howard finds the universe fascinating? He's just going through some things, give him a break. I would hope that if you went through personal tragedy that ppl would be a bit more understanding, but hey, that's what no talented writers do, become cynical bloggers.
