The Rock Talks Spy Hunter!
By Diego Alejandro Arias on August 9, 2006

Latino Review had the chance to sit down with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
and discuss his upcoming feature,
Gridiron
Gang. Johnson also discussed the anticipated
Spy
Hunter and clarified the film’s current progress.
In Gridiron
Gang, Johnson portrays the true story of Coach Sean Porter, a detention
camp probation officer, who creates and inspires a ragtag group of teenage felons
to participate in the game of football. The film is based on the Emmy Award-winning
1993 television documentary by Lee and Linda Stanley. It is based on the Kilpatrick
Detention Center and chronicles the uplifting story of the Kilpatrick Mustangs
and their two mentors, Coach Porter and his co-worker, Malcolm Moore, played
by MTV’s “Pimp My Ride Host”, Xzibit.
Johnson, who discussed his previous experience as a football player, elaborated
on the sport’s ability to change his life as a youth and help him surpass
a troubled past. He also touched on the importance of filming on the actual
grounds of the Kilpatrick Detention Center and the film’s relationship
to the ’93 documentary. When asked what he thought of filming on the actual
location, Johnson mentioned that the studio had “spoken to Stanley”
and that they understood the importance of having an authentic connection. In
regards to the film’s themes, Johnson expressed hope in reaching out to
inner city youths and helping them realize the influence that a disciplined
sport can have on social development.
Other important news was Johnson’s response to Spy
Hunter’s current delay. When asked where the project was
heading, he mentioned that everything was moving in a “positive”
direction, but that it was all a question of “everyone agreeing
on the script”. He discussed the Interceptor, his interest in
the film, and the film’s attractive quality: “it’s
about the guy that hunts Bond”.
For those that wish to see the footage of the Johnson’s interview, it
will be posted in the upcoming days.
