The Smurfs Movie Poster

The Smurfs Movie Poster Now we know what the Smurfs Movie is going to be all about. We had inklings of plot before this when casting asides told us that the Smurfs would be from Belgium and, of course, the property is for children. However, I'm always interested to know if a discussion ever happens with these aging properties where the producers question weither to play to kids with a classic property they've never seen before or if they should slant it towards a slightly older crowd that found the animated series in the 80s.

I saw some Hanna Barbara Smurfs cartoons while growing, and I don't have any children, so part of me (the tiny, optimistic part) was hoping that a little bit of realism and borderline adult subject matter would make it into the film. Not Smurf tits or Smurf sex, but some acknowledgement that these little blue gnomes are pretty bizarre.

This poster makes me think that's not going to happen. "Say Hello To Our Little Friend" is such a flat Scarface-joke that it reeks of animated children's films that try to play to adults but end up feeling hollow. Like Shark's Tale or Shrek The Third.

This is our first look at a CGI Smurf, but they seemed to have rendered him in a pose that highlights his geometric simplicity and the textures make him look like a walking plastic doll.

Tell Columbia, Sony and director Raja Gosnell (Beverly Hills Chihuahua) we're not impressed yet.

The Smurfs Movie is eyeing a 2D and 3D release on December 17, 2010.
