Too Much Punisher Drama Fo Yo Mama

By George 'El Guapo' Roush on July 30, 2008
Conflicting reports in the world of the Punisher: War Zone. In case you're not up to speed, there's been rumor after rumor of director Lexi Alexander being shit canned from the project because the studio didn't like her cut or the fact that she's a woman. Maybe not the woman part, but I'm wondering what the real beef is here. There are a couple of sides to this story from different websites.

First up, UGO:

We got a call from an inside source, whom we’ll nerdily call Detective Soap, that’s been privy to a lot of the back and forth.  He tells me that trouble between the studio and Lexi started months ago when Lionsgate sent her some publicity materials for her approval that she put up on her blog.  Punisher fans (like us) gobbled that up and sent that link around, but it wasn’t all part of the marketing campaign that Lionsgate had in mind.  (And when you figure that this is the studio behind franchise successes like Saw, figure they know what they’re doing.) When the studio asked her to remove the pics, she went a little bananas, claiming that this was unfair and stifling censorship - a harbinger of overreactions to come.

The project, though, has not been taken completely out of her hands as some recent internet postings might lead you to believe.  She is still contracted as a consultant on the film and is involved in further decision-making.  Detective Soap just hopes that it is more of the Jekyll and less the Hyde.

But Judao has this to say in regards to what's going on:

Producer Deborah Del Prete, Frank Miller’s partner on The Spirit, took her shot at matter just minutes before the roundtables for her movie.

“I’ve seen the article and it’s bad. I’m very close friend with Lexi and I must tell you, it’s all wrong. She wasn’t fired, they took the movie away from her. I’ve seen her cut and it’s amazing, but someone else thought otherwise. I’ve been working with her and she’s a great director. I’ll keep on trusting her and the only thing I can tell about this is that I trust her.”

You know who loses out on all of this ego bullshit drama so common place in this industry? The fans. We don't care about your squabbles. We don't care about your fights. What we DO CARE ABOUT is if the movie is going to be good or not.

I don't like the studio stepping in on a director's toes when the director was hired to bring their vision of the movie to the big screen. If you didn't trust Lexi in the first place, then you shouldn't have hired her. Pissing contests because she put pictures up on her blog are just so stupid.

On the flip side, if Lexi is doing things that are contradicting studio marketing plans, then yes, Lionsgate has every right to be pissed off. This is a big film for them, and if it tanks, then it's just egg in everyone's face and we'll never, ever see another Punisher film on the big screen.

Bottom line is, you guys have to think of the fans first. Get two different cuts together, Lexi's and yours, and test screen them anonymously and see which one audiences dig more and release that cut. Lexi and Lionsgate, do what's right for the fans. Not what's right for your egos.

Hug it out, bitches.

I like being punished and sent to my room. I have video games in there. What about you? E-mail: george@latinoreview.com
