The trades are reporting on a superhero DC meeting Warner Brothers will soon be having to try and capitalize on properties that don't involve a giant 'S' and a bat.
So far WB has sat on DC comic book character properties like The Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and others letting Marvel get all the glory. Despite the rave reviews The Dark Knight is getting, it doesn't mean much when competitor Marvel already has a plan laid out with crossovers and the Avengers project in the works.
Watching Iron Man and The Hulk do well at the box office must have woken up one of the execs at the water tower, who are normally too busy playing paintball with the grips on the backlot. This sentence from the article pretty much sums up the overall chickens with their heads cut off confusion going on in Burbank right now:
While DC’s senior VP of creative affairs Gregory Noveck pegs Warners toppers Jeff Robinov and Alan Horn as “the ultimate decisionmakers,” they’re the decisionmakers for pretty much everything at the studio, and neither is in a position to dive into active development of the DC universe.
So either Warner is content with saying how awesome Batman is for the next three years or they'll finally grow a pair and realize they're getting behind in the comic book movie game. Even with The Dark Knight and Watchmen coming out soon, fans are clamoring for more. When the Justice League movie was put on hold (probably because it would have sucked) it seemed as if Warner Brothers had given up on DC characters.
Let's see if this meeting will re-energize a lethargic attempt at getting these guys off the colored page and onto the big screen:
The studio is keeping details of its meetings under wraps, but issued a statement saying, in part, “We’re constantly looking at how best to exploit the DC Comics characters and properties.”
Hopefully exploit doesn't mean making a deal with retail stores on comic book themed toilet paper. Although that isn't a bad idea considering the shit fans have had to put up with so far in regards to the "Its on - It's off" mentality Warner has had lately.
Batman and Watchmen will both be successes but if this meeting has one goal, it should be getting more characters greenlit instead of relying on current franchises. C'mon Warner, get Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and Flash onto the big screen already. We've waited long enough.
