The first Hitman was released on November 21st 2007 and ended up grossing just shy of $40 million dollars in the US. The action film saw Agent 47 trek across eastern Europe, desperately trying to add a story to a video game plot. Luckily, the flick did better in the international box office, pulling in upwards of $60 million and giving this one-off video game adaptation the scent of a possible franchise.
Coming Soon got a chance to pick the bald brain of Hitman's star, Agent 47, Mr. Timothy Olyphant at the junket for David Twohy's A Perfect Getaway (that one opens August 7th).
Twentieth Century Fox has writer Kyle Ward attached to the Hitman 2 script as well as another video game adaptation based on Eidos Interactive's Kane & Lynch. We know the project exists, but when Olyphant was asked, he said:
“It’s not on my schedule. If they want me to do another one, I supposed they could have me, yes. [...] What I can tell you about ‘Hitman’ is that I’m thrilled that it was as successful as it was and it was a really nice opportunity and I appreciate that opportunity.”
So...is there going to be a Hitman 2 that replaces Olyphant with another bald actor? Or is Hitman 2 languishing in development hell for a little?
I don't really see the need for a second Hitman. I can't find an accurate report of the budget for the first one, but the two things I do remember hearing about it are that it performed admirably it's opening weekend, landing in the $20 million zone and that the opening scene with the bar codes is wholly stolen from the TV show Dark Angel.
If the film cost something like $30 million dollars, bring on the sequel. There's only room for improvement.
