Will Smith and I Am Legend Director To Sail Again?

Will Smith and his I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence (Constantine, Britney Spears' "I'm a Slave 4 U" video) might reunite for Twentieth Century Fox to tell a slightly fantastical story that literally brings London and New York a little closer together.

"The City That Sailed," currently being developed at Fox under Smith's Overbrook production banner, tells the story of the daughter of an American street magician who is living in England separated from her father. One day, when exploring a lighthouse, she stumbles across a room with "magic candles" and wishes to be closer to magical dad...causing the island of Manhattan to spilt from the US and start floating towards England.

Andrew Niccol, writer of The Terminal, The Truman Show and 2005's Lord Of War lays claim to Sailed's script.

Neither Smith or Lawrence have officially signed on to the project. Mechanics of Will Smith working like they do, it's likely up to the actor to choose his next project after last year's drama, Seven Pounds - which was buzzed as under-watched, but still benefited from the Smith-effect by finally grossing a little over $168 million dollars worldwide, easily recouping its budget which fell somewhere between $55-$60 million.

Lawrence is also developing two other movies at Fox, one called Water for Elephants, and the other: The World Without Us. It's unclear which picture he'll choose to shoot first.

As for Will Smith, it's nice to see his name circling something that isn't his Old Boy remake with Steven Spielberg rumored to be directing. Both because this project isn't an attempted adaptation of something that doesn't need an American remake and because world-wide film audiences, generally, would much rather see Will Smith sail New York City to his daughter than take out gangsters with a hammer.
