At one point, William Shatner was going to be in the new "Star Trek" film, for just one scene, and now the original written version has appeared online. For those who have seen the movie, Shatner would've appeared during Old and Young Spock's conversation near film's end. Old Spock plays an Old Kirk hologram/transmission for Young Spock, that he had in a little disc thing that was hanging around his neck.
Here's an excerpt:
INT. STARFLEET HOSPITAL - EARTH - DAY
Our montage comes full circle as we END on Kirk's transmission:
KIRK/SHATNER Who's to say we can't go one more round? By the last tally, only twenty five percent of the galaxy's been chartered... I'd call that negligent. Criminal even -- an invitation. (MORE)
KIRK/SHATNER (CONT'D) You once said being a starship captain was my first, best destiny... if that's true, then yours is to be by my side. If there's any true logic to the universe... we'll end up on that bridge again someday.
Stops, grins. Because this is the part he needs to say most...
KIRK Admit it, Spock. For people like us, the journey itself... is home.
Young Spock's face. Lost in feelings that flood through him.
I'm of two minds concerning this. It certainly is a well written scene, and does add some poignancy to the end of the film (which was already poignant enough). There definitely would've been more of a sense of closure and things coming full circle for the original crew, as well as a new beginning for the Abrams series.
At the same time, as well written as it may be, the scene does feel a bit like a gimmick. I mean, what are the odds that Spock would have had that transmission thingy hanging around his neck at the exact moment that he was thrown through time? And what are the odds that Shatner would be saying the exact words that Young Spock would need to hear at that moment...words that coincidentally would be the perfect voice over to end a film with? In a movie already ripe with coincidences, this might've been too much. Or, we would've accepted it, and it would've been a perfect emotional ending. I guess we will never know.
